A new all-cargo airline in Indian skies

May first week will see the launch of a new freighter airline in India. Promoted by Singapore-based Cardinal Aviation, and backed by prominent Indian financial institutions like IL&FS and IDFC, QuickJet will begin its service by early-May this year. The all-cargo carrier will fly B737-300F, first in Indian skies, on metro routes linking Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi, by both directions overnight. The B737-300F will offer a revenue payload capacity of 18 tonnes. Operations will fully be automated.

India-Chile air link to be established soon

The government has approved the signing of Air Services Agreement (ASA) between government of India and the Republic of Chile, which was initialed during bilateral civil aviation consultations between the two countries in  August 30, 2007 in New Delhi. The new arrangement signifies an important landmark in the civil aviation relations between India and the Republic of Chile and will pave the way for establishment of air links between the two countries.

Highlights of the essential features of the ASA are: 1. Both countries shall have the right to designate as many airlines as they wish to; 2. Either party may revoke, suspend or limit the operating authorisation or technical permissions of an airline designated by the other party in some specified cases; 3. Both parties reaffirm their obligation to each other to protect the security of civil aviation against any act of unlawful interference; 4. Airlines are free to decide the prices for air services based on the commercial considerations in the marketplace and 5. The airlines of each party shall have the right to establish offices in the territory of the other party for the promotion and sale of air services.

Etihad Crystal Cargo and Cargoitalia sign agreement

Etihad Crystal Cargo has signed an interline agreement and a codeshare arrangement with Cargoitalia, the Italian private freighter airline operating from Milan’s Malpensa airport.

The deal, which came into effect from April 5, will provide customers with continued freighter capacity access between Abu Dhabi and Milan where the service will link with Cargoitalia’s network of destinations in the USA and Central America including New York, Chicago, Houston as well as Mexico City.

Safexpress promotes health care logistics

Safexpress recently sponsored two meets pertaining to health care, which include the three-day 1st India Health Conclave at Taj Palace & Towers, Mumbai and annual conference of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) at Toshali Sand Resorts in Puri, Orissa.

According to Pawan Jain, CMD, Safexpress, health care industry is a US $40 billion industry in India and is expected to grow to nearly US $80 billion by 2012. Safexpress and IMA have been working together to mobilise the very perspective that organised logistics is imperative for the success of effective health care distribution. The purpose of being a part of the conference was to disseminate information on the crucial role that logistics can play in the health care industry. The logistics industry can provide super-specialised handling of the health care product through a strong cold chain in addition to faster transit time and TAT. The biggest issue at the IMA annual meet was identified as the role of logistics in the health care industry.

DHL strengthens East India network

DHL further enahnced its network infratructure in East India with its inauguration of a state-of-the-art DHL Service Centre in Kolkata. The 16,431sqft facility will handle over 1,110 inbound and outbound shipments a day weighing more than 1.3 tonnes. DHL's international expertise will also reflect in the Kolkata new service centre with effective all-round CCTV monitoring, enahnced safety and security procedures, weighing dimensional labelling (WDM) machines for accurate weighing, radio frequency scanners, powered conveyor belts, power stackers to handle heavy loads, etc.

DP World Chennai unveils 2007-08 financial performance

In the financial year 2007-08 DP World Chennai terminal has handled a total of 759 vessels. The terminal has achieved a total throughput of 1,121,500 TEUs in the year which is a 27.22 per cent growth over the previous financial year. The terminal has handled a record monthly volume of 108,271 TEUs in March 2008.

According to the company sources, during the course of the year the terminal has commenced four new mainline services viz. MECL2 (direct service to US East Coast), NEMO (direct service to Mediterranean, UK and Europe), North China Chennai (direct service to the North China ports) and the Asia Chennai Service (to the ports of Korea and China). Shreyas Shipping’s coastal feeder also commenced operations this year making the terminal a truly global hub port. To cater to the increasing volume of the trade and to enhance operational efficiency DP World Chennai procured new container handling equipment viz. four new RTGs and one new Empty Container Handler.

Triple celebrations at JNPT

India's primary gateway port JN Port handed 4.06 million TEUs of containers during the FY 2007-08, a landmark achievement by the port by crossing four million TEU mark for the first time. Out of this, handling at JNPCT was 1.26 million TEUs, at NSICT 1.51 million TEUs and at GTICT 1.29 million TEUS. The growth in container traffic works out to be 23 per cent over the container traffic of 3.30 million TEUs in FY2006-07.
