Budget 2008-09: Exporters unhappy

Expressing his disappointment over the Union Budget, Ganesh Kumar Gupta, president, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) said that the Budget has not addressed the problems faced by the exporters in view of appreciating rupee and stagnating traditional markets.

He also pointed out that the proposal to provide zero rating of exports through refund of States and local levies, exemption from FBT on genuine business expenses, exemption from all service taxes on services used during the course of exports to provide a level playing field to Indian exporters have not been considered.

Etihad wins 4 new Indian routes, 4 more in pipeline

Boosting its flying programme to India, Etihad Airways is adding four new online stations: Chennai, Jaipur, Kolkata and Kozhikode (Calicut, Kerala) to its fast expanding global network.

Etihad’s decision follows successful bilateral talks held in February first week between India and the UAE, informed James Hogan, chief executive, Etihad Airways. Hogan added that Etihad is aiming to further liberalising the flying links between the two countries.

Gati makes alliance with GLS to launch Gati Europe Express

Gati, India’s leading express distribution and supply chain management company, has entered into a strategic alliance with Amsterdam based General Logistics Systems (GLS), one of the three largest parcel service providers in Europe for mutual benefits. As a result, Both Gati and GLS are likely to penetrate the express logistics markets in Europe and India respectively in a big way.

The alliance forms a crucial part of Gati’s campaign to successfully penetrate and capture a significant market share in Europe by leveraging GLS International sales, logistical and support services. Gati Europe Express will become operational in this quarter. In the alliance with Gati, General Logistics Systems will act as a strategic partner for Gati in Europe providing easy access for Gati’s customers in the region, while Gati will act as GLS’ international strategic partner in India to better serve their customers in India.

IAL Group launches air freight division in India

On February 15, IAL Container Line (India) announced the official launch of the air freight division. Dubai based IAL Group of Companies, which is also possessing ‘IATA cargo agent’ accreditation, has taken new initiatives to set up separate and dedicated offices to exclusively promote airfreight.

IAL Group is already well represented across India with 50 plus owned offices, predominantly focusing on sea freight. The launch of air freight division is aimed to consolidate the company’s logistics business in India by offering multimodal connectivity to its customers.

Freight rates from Indian Subcontinent to Europe increased

Effective March 1, 2008, container freight rates ex-Indian ports to key European ports has been rised by US$ 100 per TEU, the India Pakistan Bangladesh Ceylon Conference (IPBCC) announced. Freight charges from Indian ports to the UK- North Continent, Scandinavia, Baltic and Med will be US$ 1,250 per TEU and US$ 1,400 per TUE from US$ 1,150 per TEU, and US$ 1,300 per TEU respectively.

Multimodalism to boost Dubai Port logistics

Shipping and logistics experts have agreed that Dubai’s unique hub proposition led by Dubai Logistics City, part of world’s first truly integrated multimodal logistics platform under development of Jebel Ali, will boost the efficiency of global port logistics, excerpts of Middle East Shipping and Logistics Forum concluded. Dubai’s integrated multimodal logistics approach was in the limelight at the inaugural Middle East Shipping and Logistics Forum 2008, a unique annual gathering of shipping and logistics industry heads from the region’s leading companies. The forum was held in Dubai recently.

Emirates Shipping joins Mediterranean India Express

Emirates Shipping Line has joined the Mediterranean India Express (MIX) service operated by United Arab Shipping Company (UASC). The MIX Service offers links to major ports of Indian Subcontinent and West Mediterranean coast via the Middle East. According to Vikas Khan, chairman and CEO, Emirates Shipping Line, the MIX Service provides reliable connection to Italy, Spain and France with direct calls at La Spezia from the Indian Subcontinent and the Middle East.
