ACTO concerned over running container trains by private operators

The Association of Container Train Operators (ACTO) has expressed serious concern over the viability of running container trains by private operators. Rajnish Kumar, general secretary, ACTO, said that the recent increase by about 15 per cent in haulage charges by Indian Railways has pushed the private container train operators to re-think about investing in such projects. Prior to the signing of the agreement, the haulage charges were increased by about 45 per cent. As a result, private players are unable to offer competitive rates to compete with truckers. Unless haulage charges are reduced and other industry-friendly initiatives taken soon, the goal of privatising the container train operation business will not be achieved, said Kumar.
