Congestion at IGI Airport Cargo Terminal
continues, MOCA assures early solution
Exporters
from north India are now facing tremendous pressure from their overseas customers
because of delay in sending shipments from IGI Airport Cargo Terminal in
Delhi. For quite a few days there has been severe congestion at the airport’s
cargo terminal because of increase of cargo volume and paucity of space. Exporters had several meetings with the custodians (airport
terminal operators), customs, airlines, ministry of civil aviation (MOCA)
and ministry of commerce. However, there have been no improvements so far, as far
as fast clearance of cargo is concerned. Lately, Alok Sinha, joint
secretary, MOCA, visited the airport for an assessment of the ground situation
and assured an early solution to the impasse. Exporters are now waiting for
further course of action.

IATA
survey shows air cargo volume increasing
In a recent IATA
survey, about 60 per cent of respondents reported stronger cargo traffic in
the last quarter, down from 77 per cent in the January survey. By February
2011 the level of international air freight volumes (measured by freight
tonne kilometers performed) had returned to the level seen prior to the
recession. However in May 2010 it had been 8 per cent higher than the
pre-recession peak due to stimulus from restocking activity earlier in the
recovery. Since then volume growth has been driven by boarder developments
in world trade and growth rates have moderated accordingly.
