Indo Arya embarked on its journey as Arya`s Central Transport of India in

Central and
State Warehousing Corporations to invite private players to build warehouses
As a long-term measure, for augmentation of the storage capacity in the
country, the government of India has formulated a scheme for the
construction of storage godowns through private entrepreneurs. Under the
scheme, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) would now give a guarantee of
ten years to the private entrepreneurs for assured hiring. A capacity, for
accommodating 149.4 lakh tonnes, is to be created under the scheme through
private entrepreneurs and Central and State Warehousing Corporations. The
Central Warehousing Corporation and State Warehousing Corporations have
already created a capacity of 46,300 tonnes and 22,500 tonnes respectively
under the scheme.

Arshiya International
launches Free Trade and Warehousing Zone at Panvel, Mumbai
Arshiya International has announced the launch of 'Free Trade and
Warehousing Zone (FTWZ),' in Mumbai (Panvel). A FTWZ is a category of
Special Economic Zone (SEZ), considered a deemed foreign territory wherein
operations such as imports, exports, warehousing, value addition, hubbing,
trading and distribution are carried out. Arshiya would be building four
more FTWZs across strategic locations in India, such as Khurja (Near Delhi)
in Uttar Pradesh, Nagpur, Chennai and East of India.

Maersk Line introduces weekly service from Shanghai to Chennai called '
Chennai Express'
Maersk Line recently announced the launch of its new Far East-Chennai weekly
service, to be known as the 'Chennai Express' (CHX). The service will start
from September 14, 2010. The port rotation for this new weekly service is,
Shanghai - Yantian - Tanjung Pelepas - Port Klang - Chennai - Vishakhapatnam
- Tanjung Pelepas – Shanghai. According to Rizwan Soomar, managing
director, Maersk Line (India & Sri Lanka), given the strong growth in auto
and electronics sector, the company would target the Far East to South East
India route (Chennai/Kolkata). The transit time of the CHX service, Shanghai
to Chennai, will be of 13 days. The first port call will be from Shanghai, on Sep 14, 2010 and is
scheduled to call on Chennai on Sep 27, 2010.

DP World
installs four giant gantry cranes at International Container Transshipment
Terminal, Kochi
DP World has
acquired four state-of-the-art giant gantry cranes, for the forthcoming
International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Kochi, which the
company is planning to officially open this year. The four Post Panamax quay
cranes are capable of lifting two twenty-foot containers at a time. These
will provide service to customers at the new terminal’s 600 metre quay and
40 hectares of yard. The ship-to-shore cranes have the capacity to handle 65
tonnes under the spreader. The boom has an outreach of 56 metres, enabling
it to serve the largest vessels, carrying 22 containers across the deck.

Allcargo to increase capacity of its Mundra Container Freight
Station
Allcargo has decided to upgrade its
Mundra Container Freight Station (CFS) by setting up a 2nd warehouse of
6,085 sq mtrs. The facility has been built on a land, measuring 28,375 sq
mtrs, with a paved yard of 23,800 sq mtrs. The company is also planning to
double its export handling capacity to 4,000 TEUs. This will increase the
total handling capacity to 7,700 TEUs per month. At present, the total
handling capacity that includes export, import and empty handling capacity,
is 4,100 TEUs per month.

Kerala to develop Azhikkal port through PPP
In a bid to create berthing and
allied facilities for cargo and container ships and a ship-repairing yard,
the Kerala government has invited bids for the development of Azhikkal port
in Kannur district, as a public-private partnership (PPP) project. Azhikkal
is one of the six among 17 notified ports identified by the state government
for development through the PPP route. Azhikkal is one of the oldest ports
in the State and is located midway between the major ports of Mangalore and
Kochi. The total cost of this project is estimated to be more than Rs 1,750
crore.

Cargo traffic gets a boost with export growth of 13.2% in July
2010
India’s exports registered a growth
of 13.2 per cent in July, 2010, at US $ 16.24 billion. During April-July
2010-11, exports reached a level of US $ 68.6 billion at a growth of 30.1
per cents while the imports were $ 112.2 billion with a growth of 33.3 per
cent. India’s imports in July were $ 29.17 billion, up by 34.3 per cent. The
government of India has set a target of US $ 200 billion, which is
achievable at a steady export growth of 15 per cent from now on.

Exporters are happy with the support from annual supplement to
the Foreign Trade Policy
The exporters in India are apparently happy
with the announcement of the Annual Supplement to the Foreign Trade Policy, by
Anand Sharma, commerce and industry minister. The major focus of the changes
have been on the continuity of the existing schemes, support to labour
intensive sectors, such as leather, handicrafts, handlooms, tea, certain
engineering products, textiles, silk carpets, marine, toys and sports goods.
According to A Sakthivel, president, FIEO, the commerce and
industry minister's decision on reduction of transaction cost and time (by
simplifying procedures and streamlining decision making) would also help all
sections of the industry.
