IATA unveils freight traffic study for 2007 and 2008

According to a recent study by IATA, international air freight traffic grew by 4.3 per cent in 2007. This is down slightly from growth of 4.6 per cent seen in 2006 and much lower than the 7-8 per cent growth trend of recent years. Middle East carriers led all regions in 2007 with a 10.1 per cent increase in freight demand down sharply from 16.1 per cent in 2006. Airlines in Asia Pacific, which account for 45 per cent of the international total, saw freight demand rise 6.5 per cent in 2007, driven by strong growth in several economies in the region.

The study also unveiled that the air freight demand environment will remain challenging. Growth is expected to slow in the first half of 2008 before picking up with overall growth of 4-4.5 per cent projected for 2008.

The move comes after feeder operators serving Chennai withdrew their surcharge following berthing and productivity improvements at the container terminal operated by DP World. Meanwhile, the local Container Shipping Lines’ Association urged the port authority to allocate more space to the Dubai company in a bid to reduce capacity constraints at the privatised container terminal.
