The ministry of civil
aviation has launched the public interface facility in the office of
Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This facility has an
objective to address the problems of public on various queries relating to
DGCA regarding aviation matters ranging from status of application by
airlines to queries from trainee pilots.
IATA unveils freight traffic study for 2007 and 2008
According to a recent
study by IATA, international air freight traffic grew by 4.3 per cent in
2007. This is down slightly from growth of 4.6 per cent seen in 2006 and
much lower than the 7-8 per cent growth trend of recent years. Middle East
carriers led all regions in 2007 with a 10.1 per cent increase in freight
demand down sharply from 16.1 per cent in 2006. Airlines in Asia Pacific,
which account for 45 per cent of the international total, saw freight
demand rise 6.5 per cent in 2007, driven by strong growth in several
economies in the region.
Canadian trade mission to meet Indian logistics players
Canada’s Minister of
National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
(ACOA), Peter Mackay, is leading an ‘Atlantic Gateway’-focused business
mission to India from February 18 to 22, 2008. He will be accompanied by
government representatives from several provinces and business delegates
from airports, ports, railways and transport-related businesses. A
roundtable, bringing together the Minister’s delegation and Indian
companies has also been organised on February 18 in New Delhi.
Member-lines of
India-Pakistan-Bangladesh-Ceylon Conference will withdraw the congestion
surcharge of US$ 100 per TEU imposed earlier on cargo moving through
Chennai Port. The move comes after feeder operators serving Chennai
withdrew their surcharge following berthing and productivity improvements
at the container terminal operated by DP World. Meanwhile, the local
Container Shipping Lines’ Association urged the port authority to allocate
more space to the Dubai company in a bid to reduce capacity constraints at
the privatised container terminal.
India’s all 12 major ports have registered a
22.16 per cent increase in container throughput between April and November
2007, compared to the same eight-month period a year earlier. Citing the
figures, Indian Ports Association said that the country’s 12 major ports
handled 4.53 million TEU during April-November 2007, up from 3.59 million
TEU (46.75 million tonnes of containerised cargo) recorded during
April-November 2006.
DP World, Chennai has announced the berth
of MV Maersk Kalamata, the largest vessel to call at Chennai Port with
the length of 304 meters and Capacity of 6416 TEUs, which is the first 5th
Generation Container vessel calling at DP World, Chennai.
Hamburg Sud, Maersk Line
and NYK have decided to terminate their joint service cooperation in the
Asia-South Africa-East Coast of South America service (ASAS/NGX) from
April 2008. However, Hamburg Sud and Maersk have agreed to continue the
cooperation after NYK’s withdrawal. From April 2008, the joint Hamburg
Sud-Maersk Line service will be carried out by ten new vessels of the
Monte Class with a nominal capacity of 5,500 TEU. This vessel class is
specifically designed to cooperate in the Latin America trades. For the second consecutive year, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisa (NYK) has been selected as one of The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World. The Global 100, which was launched in 2005, is an annual research and ratings project conducted jointly by Innovest Strategic Value Advisors Inc. and Corporate Knights Inc. With Koji Miyahara as president, NYK has its global headquarters in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. |
