India and Saudi Arabia sign fresh Air Services Agreement

Recently, India and Saudi Arabia signed a new bilateral air services agreement (ASA) at Jeddah to designate multiple airlines, enhance the existing traffic entitlement and remove all limitations on the cargo services with immediate effect.

According to the new ASA, for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Calicut, Lucknow and Bangalore were included as new points of call besides Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi and Hyderabad and Madina was included as a new point of call for the Indian carriers in addition to the existing points of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. Significantly,  Saudi Arabia is the first country in Middle East/Gulf to get the facility of flights to Calicut. Similarly, India is the first country to be granted access to operate to Madina on schedule basis.

Workshops on cold chain organised in Delhi and Kolkata

The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is organising a series of workshops to strengthen India's cold chain infrastructure with an objective to engage Indian growers, distributors and logistics service providers, traders, and retailers that handle perishable products. This programme is the part of the US-India Agriculture Knowledge Initiative (AKI) and is deemed a high priority by government of India and US government members of the AKI committee.

As part of Phase II of this activity, two workshops will be organised on March 5-7, 2008 in New Delhi and on March 11-13, 2008 in Kolkata. There is no participation fees associated with the programme and the number of seats is limited in both the locations.The first phase of the programme was organised in Chennai and Mumbai in late November and early December 2007 respectively.

Deutsche Bahn introduces new brands

Deutsche Bahn AG reorganised its brand architecture. Effective December 2007, DB Bahn became the official brand for all passenger mobility services, DB Netze became the new brand for the infrastructure and services divisions and DB Schenker stood for worldwide transport and logistics.

According to the company sources, the new brands would support the group's strategy of international expansion and networking and present a simple, clear and uniform face to the public. The new brands are based on the successful brand management and positioning of recent years.

Elbee announces Rs. 200-cr expansion

Elbee Express, one of the fastest and oldest express delivery companies in India, has announced its Rs. 200-cr expansion plan. According to Nikhil Shah, executive director,  the aggressive expansion plan will include doubling the number of branches during the coming four to five months, thus covering over 15,200 locations in India. The plans and investment are aimed at to be the leader in the industry in the next five years, he added.

Four Soft to provide solutions to Samudera Shipping Line

Four Soft (4S), the leading software solutions provider for transportation and logistics verticals, recently signed a contract with Samudera Shipping Line, a Singapore based company. Under the terms of the agreement, 4S will implement its shipping software solution – 4S iShipping to cater to the Samudera’s shipping business.

According to Rakesh Kumar, vice president – Asia, Four Soft, 4S iShipping has rich functionality and integrated modules which will fit Samudera’s business processes and requirement.  Once implemented, the industry-specific solution will offer a single user interface for Samudera’s employees to access and share its operational and financial supply-chain information, allowing for increased visibility of its goods.

Emirates Shipping Line joins NIX

Emirates Shipping Line has announced its participation in the North China India Express (NIX) service operated by KMTC and CNC linking major ports of China, Korea, Southeast Asia and India.

Emirates Shipping Line has acquired slots on this express service commencing from February 22. NIX service provides direct port connection across Korea, Northern China and Nhava Sheva, and is also one of the few services in the region serving Northern China and Nhava Sheva. The NIX claimed to be one of the best transit times in the industry between North China/ Korea and India, with only 14 days from Pusan to Nhava Sheva.

Iran woos India to expand business

Danesh Jafri, minister of finance and economic affairs, Islamic Republic of Iran, has invited Indian business to cash in on the myriad opportunities for investment in Iran and take advantage of the country’s strategic location for exports to the rest of the world. Speaking at an interactive business meeting organised by FICCI in New Delhi, Jafri said Iran was uniquely located at the heart of a cross-road connecting the Middle East, Asia and Europe, and was empowered by many inter- and trans-regional trade, customs, tax and investment arrangements.
 
Sarthak Behuria, chairman, India-Iran Joint Business Council (JBC), who was also present at the meeting, urged the Iranian minister to look into the Indian demand of encouraging Indian carriers to launch air passenger and cargo services to Iran in view of non-existence of any such services from the Indian side.
