Dedicated Freight Corridor to be operational by 2017, says Railway Board
 
The Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), the Indian Railways’ quadrilateral project linking the four metropolitan cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Howrah, commonly known as the Golden Quadrilateral; and its two diagonals (Delhi-Chennai and Mumbai-Howrah), will be completed by 2017, said Vivek Sahai, chairman, Railway Board, while addressing a press conference immediately after the announcement of Rail Budget 2011-12 by the Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee. Meanwhile, the loan agreement for Phase I of Western Corridor with Japan International Corporation Agency has been signed and bidding process has been started. For the eastern Corridor the process will start next month.

Shipping Ministry invites Expression of Interest to handle cargo from Australia to India
 
With a view to ensure timely shipment of bulk cargoes from Australia, Chartering Wing (Transchart), Ministry of Shipping invites Expression of Interest (EOI) from leading and reputed agents having broad-based network of their offices and necessary infrastructure in Australia for carrying out the functions of charters’ agents in respect of vessels loading bulk cargoes on account of Government of India or its nominees. Interested parties may submit the expression of interest (EOI) as per the prescribed format in a sealed cover either by Registered Post or by hand to Chief Controller of Chartering, Ministry of Shipping office in New Delhi, on or before March 7, 2011. The bid will be opened on March 8, 2011.

Ministry of Civil Aviation to formulate a time-bound programme for Cargo and Express Services

The recently formed Working Group on Air Cargo and Express Services under the Ministry of Civil Aviation has decided to prepare and present a paper on the current scenario of the industry and assess its future growth potential in India. Headed by M Kannan, economic adviser, Ministry of Civil Aviation as chairman and co-coordinator, with industry stakeholders as members, the Group is discussing various issues from long term perspective, with a goal of find appropriate solutions in a stipulated time. Meanwhile, it has met twice within a span of 15 days and has chalked out several meetings to discuss air cargo and the express scenario (both domestic and international) in the country.

Domestic Air Cargo Agents Association of India elects new managing committee, Arvind Nayak continues as president
 
The Domestic Air Cargo Agents Association of India (DACAAI) elected its new managing committee during the recently held 2nd annual convention of the association in New Delhi. Arvind Nayak, managing director, Nayak Aviation Services, has taken over as president for the second time. Other office bearers are: Gaurav Ghulwalewala (vice president), Suraj Agrawal (general secretary), Inderjeet Sherawat (joint secretary) and Ananda Agarwala (treasurer). The managing committee members include, Amit Gulati, Amit Bajaj, Hari Nair, Sajjan Sharma, Raj Kumar Ghosh, Mario Jude, Ravijeet Sharma and Sanjay Agrawal.

Kingfisher Airlines introduces 11 new flights in domestic sector
 
Kingfisher Airlines has announced the launch of eleven new flights on its domestic route network. Effective March 1, 2011, the airline has announced a completely new route— New Delhi-Ranchi-Patna-New Delhi. In addition, additional frequencies are being introduced on the following existing routes:- a third late evening flight on New Delhi-Amritsar-New Delhi route; a second daily on New Delhi-Srinagar-New Delhi route and 7 days of the week flights on New Delhi-Guwahati-Imphal-Guwahati-New Delhi route.

TSA air cargo head to interact with the industry on 100% screening of all US-bound cargo

Doug Brittin, general manager, transportation sector network management, US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), will address The International Air Cargo Association’s (TIACA) Executive Summit to be held in Bangkok from April 19-21 to discuss TSA’s proposal to bring forward its 100 per cent screening target to 31 December 2011. Brittin will give a status update on TSA’s proposal, which could apply to all international air cargo shipments to the United States.

FedEx Express has formally completed the acquisition of the logistics, distribution and express businesses of AFL and its affiliate, Unifreight India. With this transaction, FedEx Express will now take over all international services for AFL and UFL customers, who will have direct access to the FedEx international air and ground network in more than 220 countries and territories worldwide.

Bids for mega container terminal at Chennai Port will be completed by April 2011

GK Vasan, the Union Minister of Shipping, recently stated that the Request for Proposal (RFP) bids, which were originally scheduled to open on December 9, 2010, will now open on  April 18, 2011. The proposed terminal will be designed to handle four million twenty feet equivalent units (TEUs) of containers per annum. He explained that apprehending environmental clearance for the project may have financial implications on the project, the bidders have sought extension of the bid due date.

ICD Loni implements 1.5 version of Customs technology for EDI and ICES activities

According to an official from ICD Loni, the private container depot has resolved the issue related to implementation of 1.5 version of Customs system. He also informed that the white shipping bills were already being processed through EDI. Now, current linkage export documents, under all incentive schemes, can also be processed online. The processing of import documents through EDI is also in the final stage of implementation.

Maersk Line launches direct service from India to Europe

Maersk Line recently announced the launch of a new service from South and East India to North Europe. The new service (called the ICON service - India Colombo North Europe service) will have a direct, dedicated and fast coverage from Chennai to North Europe. The new service will have 7x3400 TEU vessels and operate with Chennai – Colombo – Salalah – Zeebrugge – Felixstowe - Rotterdam – Bremerhaven –Salalah – Colombo port rotation. According to Rizwan Soomar, managing director, Maersk Line (India & Sri Lanka), with excellent transit times from Chennai (India) to Felixstowe (UK), this is a fast product and well suited for all Maersk Line’s customers in time sensitive industries like apparel and retail.

Shreyas Relay Systems ties up with All India Coastal Forwarder Welfare Committee

Shreyas Relay Systems, which offers door to door multimodal transportation solutions, incorporating road-rail-sea routes, has announced that the company has entered into a strategic alliance with All India Coastal Forwarder Welfare Committee (AICFWC) to bridge up the knowledge gap amongst the members of AICFWC by creating a knowledge-interactive platform.
