Ministry organises national conference on civil aviation

The ministry of civil aviation has decided to hold a one-day conference on January 18, 2008 at the Ashok Hotel, New Delhi with the related state ministers and the chief secretaries of all states/UTs to discuss various programmes and policies of the government of India on civil aviation as well as to provide a forum for the states to project issues of concern to them.

Keeping in mind the aviation sector is experiencing an unprecedented growth, it has been felt imperative to constructively engage the state governments and make them active partners in the development of civil aviation, the ministry sources said.

India and Hong Kong ink ASA

India and Hong Kong has arrived at an air services agreement (ASA) in New Delhi on 17-18 December, 2007. The Indian delegation was led by R.K. Singh, joint secretary in the ministry of civil aviation while the Hong Kong delegation was led by Esmond Lee, deputy secretary, Transport and Housing Bureau, Hong Kong.

As per the new agreement, 27 new services for each side will be possible on the Indian Hong Kong route. While the Indian side can operate these 27 services from any point in India, the Hong Kong carriers can operate 10 services to Delhi, 6 services to Mumbai and 11 services altogether to Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata. Chennai was added as a new point of call during these talks for the Hong Kong side.

Cabinet gives in principle approval to airport at Noida

The Union Cabinet okayed the construction of an international airport at Greater Noida. However, it referred the subject to a group of ministers (GoM) to resolve the disputes regarding some objections raised by the Delhi International Airport (DIAL). DIAL may also construct the new airport through JV with UP government and AAI, if their bid is not below 90 per cent of the highest bidder for the new airport. The GoM will comprise P. Chidambaram, finance minister; H.R. Bhardwaj, law minister; Kapil Sibal, science and technology minister and Praful Patel, civil aviation minister.

Spread over 1,500 hectares, the airport in the National Capital Region will be called Taj International Aviation Hub and will be located at about 60 km from the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi.

Conference on trans-national highways to be held in Delhi

With an objective of developing trans-national highways and road network for promotion of trade, commerce and tourism between India, Asia & Europe, All India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA) has organised for the first time, an international conference on January 7 and 8, 2008 titled ‘India Global Logistic Vision 2008’ at the Hotel The Grand, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.

The deliberations over the two days will include a wide range of trade facilitation issues such as import and export procedures, transport formalities, payments, and insurance and other financial requirements, as well as role of industry and trade associations. Pawan Kr. Bansal, minister of state for finance, government of India will inaugurate the conference and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, former vice president of India will deliver the Key Note Address. T. R. Baalu, union minister of road transport & highways shall be the chief guest at the valedictory session.

Ajay Khera joins Horizon Country Wide Logistics

Ajay Khera has taken over as  vice chairman & managing director of Horizon Country Wide Logistics, a Group Company of SKIL Infrastructure in Mumbai. Prior to this assignment, he was with Central Warehousing Corporation, and took voluntary retirement from the Corporation, after serving it and the government for about 29 years.

Khera, with his management expertise and has been in forefront for entrepreneurship, will be spearheading the work related to infrastructure development, in the shape of CFSs/ICDs/SEZs/Logistics Parks, with hands on experience in the JNPT area, for a very long period.

Asia export surge boosts India shipping business

Asia and especially ASEAN region, have emerged the key trading partners for India with growing exports, mainly of agricultural produce, frozen meat and seafood, and import of China-made goods lifting trade on these routes to higher levels. India’s exports to Asian countries and the ASEAN region jumped 28.86 per cent to US$ 72.6 billion in the 12-month period to March, accounting for 49.78 per cent of India’s total exports by value. In comparison, exports to North America rose 11.39 per cent to US$ 2.3 billion in the same period, making up 15.85 per cent of exports by value.

Tasco sees wider network

Trans-Asia Shipping Corp (Tasco), scheduled to list on Bursa Malaysia board on December 28, 2007, sees its wider network as enhancing its standing in the competitive logistics industry. The company intends to synergise its sea, air and land services by servicing customers with a network that combines the shipping fleet of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) group. Manufacturers prefer one-stop solutions providers, the company says.
