Traffic handling capacity at major ports being augmented: GK Vasan
 
Under the National Maritime Development Programme (NMDP) the ministry of shipping, government of India has alloted a total investment of Rs.1,00,339 crores to augment the traffic handling capacity of all major ports in the country. In the port sector, the total anticipated investment is Rs 55,804 crores for 276 projects covering various activities namely, construction/up-gradation of berths, deepening of channels, rail/road connectivity projects, equipment up-gradation/modernisation schemes and other related schemes. To encourage private sector investment in the port sector, the government of India has finalised model Request for Qualification (RFQ), Request for Proposal (RFP) and Model Concession Agreement (MCA) to ensure uniformity and transparency in the bid process, informed G K Vasan, shipping minister, government of India.

New 'Chennai International Terminals' starts cargo operation
 
Chennai International Terminals, which is the joint venture between PSA International, Singapore and Chennai-based Sical Logistics, began commercial operations at Chennai Port. The JV company is the second private container terminal operator at the Chennai port, and established a new terminal on build-operate-transfer model at an investment of US$110 million. The terminal has yard space of 35 hectares, and three berths with a total quay length of 832 meters. The terminal’s annual capacity is 1.5 million TEUs. Once fully operational, the terminal will be able to accommodate 8,000 TEU vessels with drafts up to 15.5 meters. According to the company sources, the terminal is ideally located to tap the high growth Chennai region.

Shipping Corporation orders two 'Platform Supply Vessels' for offshore services
 
The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has placed orders for two Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) on July 9 with Cochin Shipyard. The vessels would be delivered to SCI by the end of 2011. These vessels will be able to offer essential support and services for the growth of Indian offshore industry. SCI had placed orders for two AHTS vessels of 120T capacity each with Cochin Shipyard in June. The present order is in line with SCI’s vision of being one of the important players in the growing offshore services sector.

AMI India introduces vehicle tracking system called 'Falcon-I'
 
American Megatrends India (AMI India) recently launched its vehicle tracking system (VTS) brand Falcon-I in Chennai. Designed, developed and manufactured in India, the dual tracking system (i.e.,VTS) works on GPS and GPRS models. It also offers multiple input and output control and reporting formats for easy and flexible monitoring of fleet movements. Easy to track route deviation, over speeding, fuel consumption and journey time, the system provides two-way communications between the vehicle and the control room. VTS aims to cater to more than 40 per cent of current market needs in terms of monitoring, controlling and managing large fleets. The vehicle tracking market is expected to grow beyond the current USD 35 million.

Calcutta Freight Brokers Association requests for domestic coastal shipping services
 
At its 71st recently held Annual General Meeting the Calcutta Freight Brokers Association urged for a need to focus on coastal shipping. It also demanded for crucial improvements at Kolkata Port as regard to transaction. According to the association, in view of the grim export scenario and with the increase of domestic cargo movement, this is the right time to focus on coastal shipping. Coastal shipping cargo is estimated to rise to 220 million tonnes by 2012. The association urged for investment in the infrastructure of coastal shipping and simplifying customs procedures and port regulations to give a boost to the segment.

GeoPost, Continental Air Express establish joint venture company 'DPD Continental' in India
 
GeoPost, the express parcel arm of French Groupe La Post and Continental Air Express, a subsidiary company of Continental Group in India has formed a joint venture company called DPD Continental. The company will deal with both inbound and outbound express parcel services in India under the world renowned brand DPD. With primary focus on the European market, the company will expand its operations across the world. GeoPost and Continental Express will hold 60 and 40 per cent stake respectively in DPD Continental.
