Kolkata airport development to begin soon, gets PIB nod

The development plans of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, Kolkata has received an unconditional Pre-Investment Board (PIB) clearance. It will now go for the approval of the government (CCEA approval) and work is expected to begin in two-months time.

Kolkata airport would be developed to international standards by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). In August 2007, AAI submitted the proposal for PIB approval. In October 2007, an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) cleared the proposal and in December 2007, Planning Commission accorded in principle approval for the development of NSCBI airport, Kolkata. Meanwhile, AAI has prepared detailed estimate and tendered documents. The date for opening of tenders for construction is June 16, 2008.

Air freight growth will be strong: OAG

According to OAG (Official Airline Guide), there will be 6.1 per cent average growth of air freight for the ensuing 10 years. Recently, OAG Analytical Services has released its third annual OAG Global Air Freight Forecast which projects trends in air freight demand and fleet for 2008-2017. The survey also unveils that Middle East and Africa will be the fastest growing regions, pushing China to third place. And, freighter fleet will grow by 3 per cent per year over next decade.

OAG is global flight information and data solutions company bringing together buyers and sellers of air travel and transport for the passenger aviation, air cargo logistics and business travel markets.

India and Iran revise Air Services Agreement

The government of India and the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran recently met in New Delhi to revise the Air Services Agreement (ASA). According to the revised ASA, the designated airlines of Iran shall be entitled to operate a total of 23 passenger/combination services per week in each direction, with an aircraft not exceeding the capacity of B747. Reciprocally, the designated airlines of India shall also be entitled to operate a total of 23 passenger/combination services per week in each direction. The designated airlines of India and Iran shall be entitled to operate any number of all-cargo services to/from any point(s) in the territory of the other side, via any intermediate point(s) and to any beyond point(s), with any type of aircraft with full 3rd, 4th and 5th freedom traffic rights.

Within the overall capacity entitlement of 23 frequencies, the designated airlines of Iran shall be entitled to operate to points in India as follows: Mumbai: 2 services per week, Delhi: seven services per week, Cochin: seven services per week and Amritsar: seven services per week.

Etihad announces services to new Indian destinations

Etihad Airways will launch its new service from its Abu Dhabi base to Kozhikode (Calicut), in Kerala State, and Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu on August 1, 2008. The airline will operate daily service to both cities. According to James Hogan, chief executive, Etihad, the airline has made no secret of the fact that it wants to build its Indian services. It looks forward to expand its flying programme to the country with the launch of these two exciting new destinations.

Indian Infrastructure organises conference on container infrastructure

On July 28-29, 2008 Indian Infrastructure will organise its Second Annual Conference on Developing Container Infrastructure at Hyatt Regency, New Delhi, in collaboration with IIM Ahmedabad and Centre for Infrastructure Policy and Regulation.

The mission of this conference is to evaluate the current state of container infrastructure, highlight the key development needs, and to showcase promising approaches strategies, projects and solutions. Specially, the conference will discuss on key trends in the container segment, status of container infrastructure, status of container capacity development initiatives at Indian ports, improvement of infrastructure with respect of container business, experience of the private container rail operators, etc.

APL expands Asia-Australia service

APL has added two new loops to its Asia and Australia services. The northbound China Australia Borth (CAN) will offer direct coverage from Japan, Korea and Central China to Australia. The south-bound China Australia South (CAS) will offer direct coverage from South China to Australian ports. The two new loops are jointly offered by APL with Hamburg Sud, Hapag Lloyd and Hyundai Merchant Marine.

Emirates Shipping Line quits Zim deal

Emirates Shipping Line has confirmed that it is ending its participation in the joint Asia Gulf Express (AGX) which it operates with Israeli carrier Zim to US ports. Launched in June 2006, the AGX service offered direct links from the Far East to the US ports of Mobile, Alabama and Tampa, Florida.
