Container
inspection procedure minimised from 100 to 20 per cent at Kochi port
The customs authority at
Kochi port has relaxed its norm of 100 per cent inspection of import
containers to 20 per cent. According to the new regulation, the EDI system
at the port would randomly select the number of containers for examination
and the concerned customs officer would announce the number of containers to
be opened for examination. After the examination of selected container,
customs would clear the entire lot of containers mentioned in the bill of
entry. The sources said that though 100 per cent inspection procedure was
initiated earlier from the security point of view, many firms complained
that huge volumes handled and lack of adequate infrastructure at the port
are major impediments for full inspection.
