Improve air cargo competitiveness, says IATA

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) called on the air cargo supply chain to coordinate efforts to drive an industry agenda for change that will improve customer service and competitiveness. Speaking at the association’s recently held second World Annual Cargo Symposium in Rome, Giovanni Bisignani, director general and CEO, IATA said that sea competitors were gaining market share with faster ships, lower prices and innovative solutions. This apart, new capacity coming into the market (200 to 300 wide bodies entering the market each year to 2011) will put even greater pressure on yields.

According to Bisignani, air cargo is a US$50 billion business that is losing competitiveness. World trade grew 7.5 per cent last year and air cargo growth forecast for this year is 4.0 per cent. The only way to succeed in air cargo market is to please the customer.

BIAL to open new Bangalore airport after May 10

The government of India has asked the Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) to consider a suitable date after May 10, 2008 for the opening of new airport at Devanahalli, Bangalore.

However, because ATC services will not be available by that time, the ministry of civil aviation was not in a position to accept that date for the opening of the airport. Given the status of the availability of ATC services, the ministry has directed BIAL to consider a suitable date after May10 for the airport opening.
