ICD Loni:
Aims to present integrated logistics hub

ICD Loni is situated near Delhi border in Ghaziabad district of UP and surrounded by manufacturing hubs like Sonepat, Panipat, Karnal, Ghaziabad, Sahibabad, Kundli and other parts of western UP. The ICD in the National Capital Region (NCR) is the first ICD managed and operated by Worlds Window Infrastructure and Logistics Private Limited (WWILPL) as a strategic alliance partner of Central Warehouse Corporation (CWC).

The ICD started operations on March 11, 2007. The ICD captured a sizeable traffic and attained a volume of 74,655 TEUs in its first year of operation in 2007-08. The ultimate aim of WWILPL is to develop an integrated logistics hub in Loni where, besides domestic and EXIM freight transportation, specialised warehousing, office space and social amenities would be provided.

At present, ICD Loni has 27.5 acres of custom bonded area which includes 2.08 lakh square feet of fully covered and developed warehousing space. A total of 96 acres of adjacent land has been acquired and ICD-related facilities are being developed by WWILPL. The present infrastructure is equipped to handle up to 20,000 TEUs per month with 2,730 ground slots, i.e. 900 for notified area and 1,830 for non-notified area.

The ICD Loni has developed one of the biggest refer container plug in and power pack facility for movement on train. With the present facility, more than 1,000 refer FEUs per month can be handled easily at Loni.

Moreover, the truck and trailer parking area has been scientifically developed to facilitate the movement and ensure the parking of 500 trucks at any given time. A separate empty container parking area has also been developed. The objective of this is to ensure that no overlapping occurs between loaded container movement and empty container movement.

The ICD Loni is patronised by almost all the major private and government train operators like Central Warehousing Corporation, India Linx (IIPL), and Boxtrans Freight Star (ETA). Almost all the major shipping lines move their cargo from ICD Loni. Some of these shipping lines are APL, HAPAG LLYOD, ESA, HMM, CGA, OOCI, CMA-CGM, CSAV, SCI, etc.

IATA suggests delivering better product and boosting efficiency to fight challenges

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has suggested that the cargo supply chain can battle the current air cargo crisis by delivering a better product and boosting efficiency. According to Giovanni Bisignani, director general & CEO, IATA, the cargo industry is facing a crisis as demands have dropped by 22.6 per cent in December and another 23.2 per cent in January. Air cargo accounts for 10 per cent of the total aviation industry revenue. As 35 per cent of the value of goods traded internationally is transported by air; air cargo is a barometer of global economic health. Thus, the continued decline in cargo markets is a clear indication that the bottom of economic crisis is yet to reach.
