Air India increases cargo market share

The formation of the Cargo Strategic Business Unit (SBU) has enabled Air India to increase its market share ex-Delhi. Air India, placed ninth at the time of the merger when the SBU was created, has gradually improved its ranking, moving to fourth position in January 2008 and first position in March 2008 as per data released by the Airports Authority of India. Air India now commands a market share of seven per cent in terms of export cargo carried from Delhi.

According to the airline sources, Air India had also launched a major cargo incentive scheme for cargo agents of Air India and erstwhile Indian on the entire network. The scheme, which generated enormous response, entitled top producing agents of each region to become eligible for an all-inclusive incentive trip on Star Cruise.

Delmos Cargo is the GSSA for Aeroflot Cargo

Delmos Cargo, a unit of Delmos Holidays, has been appointed as general sales and service agent (India) for CJSC Aeroflot Cargo, which is 100 per cent subsidiary of Aeroflot Russian Airlines to cater cargo and courier business.

All regular flight’s cargo space of Aeroflot Russian Airlines are chartered /affrighted by CJSC Aeroflot Cargo. To handle operations in India CJSC Aeroflot Cargo had formed a joint venture with Wingspan called Aeroflot Cargo Pvt. Ltd (ACPL) and appointed them as GSSA for CJSC Aeroflot Cargo in India. From April18, 2008, Delmos Cargo has been appointed as GSSA (India). The company is already catering cargo business of Transaero, Uzbekistan Airways from different countries.

Emirates and Qatar Airways to start Kozhikode services

Emirates Airline is all set to launch its flights to Kozhikode, a port city in the southern Indian State of Kerala. The Dubai-headquartered international airline’s six-flights-week service, to begin on July 1, 2008, bears testimony to its long-standing commitment to this market and its robust expansion drive. Kozhikode will be Emirates’ third gateway in Kerala after Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, and tenth in India.

Starting from June 15, 2008, Qatar Airways will also operate flights to Kozhikode, the airline’s third gateway in the State of Kerala. The airline will operate daily non-stop services between Doha, capital of the State of Qatar, and Kozhikode using an Airbus A320 aircraft. The airline already serves Cochin and Trivandrum in Kerala and a further six cities across India. The addition of Kozhikode, its ninth destination in India, takes the airline’s frequency into the country to 58 flights a week.

AERA and cargo policy to be placed by the year-end

The proposed Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) is expected to be in place by October this year, said Ashok Chawla, secretary, ministry of civil aviation, while he was addressing an international conference on Indian airports organised by FICCI in association with the ministry of civil aviation on April 29 and 30 in New Delhi. The ministry is considering an air cargo policy, which is also likely to be placed by the year-end.

The objective of forming the AERA is to facilitate the development of the airports sector, look into the issues of tariffs and monitor the quality of services at airports. AERA is to ensure a level-playing filed for all stakeholders in airport development. Currently, the Bill envisaging the creation of the regulatory body is in Parliament.

Joost den Hartog appointed Etihad's regional general manager

Joost den Hartog, Etihad’s current country manager for Pakistan and acting country manager for China, has been appointed regional general manager for Indian Subcontinent, Central and North Asia. He will lead the Abu Dhabi-based airline’s growing presence. The new role for Hartog, which takes effect from June 1 this year, will see him based in Bangkok with responsibility for a region including India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Nepal and Kazakhstan.

Prologis makes alliance with K Raheja

ProLogis, the world’s leading owner, manager and developer of distribution facilities, recently announced that it has entered the logistics market in India through a 50/50 development joint venture agreement with K Raheja Corp, one of the largest real estate developers in India.

Under the terms of the agreement, the joint venture will acquire land, develop properties and manage the assets and will initially focus on securing development opportunities in the cities of Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Pune – which are among the fastest growing locations for distribution operations in India.

K-Line starts Second Loop service on Asia-Mexico/West Coast America route

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. (K-Line) has launched its Second Loop in its Asia-Mexico/West Coast South America Service (New Andes) which is jointly operated with Mitsui OSK Line, Ltd (MOL). The twice-weekly service will offer faster transit time between Asia and West Coast South America ports and provide high quality service to accommodate rapid growth of trade volume.
