Company Profile:
Port Pipavav: A
key gateway to North-West India
Port Pipavav in Gujarat is an all-weather port. The port is
located at Pipavav in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, 75.6 nautical
miles
South-West of Bhavnagar and 153 nautical miles North-West of Mumbai. It is a
part of APM Terminals’ global network. With container operations spread over
more than 50 terminals spanning 31 countries and five continents, APM
Terminals is one of the largest container terminal operators in the world.
Port Pipavav is an integrated service provider offering marine services. Its
location makes it an ideal gateway for India’s North-West hinterland. Port
Pipavav offers a total quay length of 1,075 metres and is equipped to handle
bulk, break-bulk and liquid cargo.
Port Pipavav has developed a modern container terminal at the port. The new
container terminal offers handling facilities, a deep draft and excellent
support infrastructure. Presently, the port handles services covering trade
lanes to Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. The container berth is
equipped with eight quay gantry cranes, five of them post-Panamax quay
gantry cranes with an outreach of 18 across and twin lift capability. The
other three are Panamax quay cranes with an outreach of 13 across. Container
yards of the port are equipped with 18 RTGs, reefer handling facilities, a
Container Freight Station (CFS) and an on-dock rail facility.
Weekly shipping services calling at Port Pipavav include ME1 (direct service
to Europe); ME3 (direct service to the Middle East and Europe); CIX (direct
service to China); NGK (direct service to China and the Far East); EGX7
(direct service to the Middle East); IMR (direct service to the Middle East
and the Red Sea); and coastal/feeders (Shreyas Relay Systems, service to
Cochin), and Jindal Vector, service to Cochin, Mangalore and Tuticorin.
Infrastructure support includes weighbridges and dedicated rail siding for
bulk and break-bulk cargo. Two private CFS facilities, Contrans Logistics
and LCL Logix Park, are located in close proximity to the port. Port Pipavav
is the first port in India to partner with Indian Railways. This partnership
led to the incorporation of Pipavav Rail Corporation Ltd (PRCL), which
established the 269 km broad gauge rail link with Surendranagar in the
north, which is connected by broad gauge to Ahmedabad via Viramgam. The
capacity of rail line is 22 trains per day.
Today, the port offers fixed day scheduled rail services to all the major
Inland Container Depots (ICDs). In March 2006, Pipavav was also the first
port in India to receive a double stack container train. The port has also
built a four-lane expressway connecting the port to National Highway 8E,
which connects the port to the rest of the country.
