Exporters express concern over freight hike

The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) criticised the hike in freight rates at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) by 10.3 per cent effective from October 1, 2008. According to Ganesh Kumar Gupta, president, FIEO, this would only add to the overhead cost burden of the micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) in the export sector. He explained that JN Port is India’s biggest container port that handles some 60 per cent of the boxed cargo managed at all ports in the country.

The FIEO president also added that the port is, currently, facing an acute capacity crunch as all its three-container handling facilities are operating at beyond their designed capacities. Capacity expansion will not come before 2010-11.
