Aviation minister voices concern over taxes on ATF
Heavy taxes imposed on ATF is the prime concern for the aviation industry in India, said Praful Patel, civil aviation minister, at a press conference held on September 29 in New Delhi to give an update of the forthcoming event called ‘India Aviation 2008’. Jointly organised by the ministry of civil aviation and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry the first international conference of this kind will take place from October 15 to 18 at Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad. Commenting on the current scenario and future of aviation industry in India Patel showed high optimism. He expressed optimism about the recommendations of the cabinet committee approved by the prime minister to look into the crisis. According to the minister, so far the committee has met once and will meet again very soon to discuss the issue.

According to Patel, ‘India Aviation 2008’ received tremendous responses from aviation majors. About 150 companies have already confirmed their participation in the event, among which 125 companies will be from abroad. The minister also informed that large support and participation will be from the USA. The event will have country pavilions from the USA, Canada and Germany.

IATA unveils traffic trends for August

The traffic data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for August has confirmed a continuing downturn worldwide. A 6.8 per cent decline in international freight shipped by carriers in the Asia Pacific region had the greatest impact as they comprise 45 per cent of the global air cargo markets. The other big market players also showed weakness. European carriers experienced a 0.9 per cent decline, while US carriers reported weak growth of 0.8 per cent. According to IATA, sharp declines in freight traffic in Latin America (-13.2 per cent) reflect restructuring in Brazil with cuts in capacity.

Commenting on the decline Giovanni Bisignani, DG & CEO, IATA said that the industry crisis is deepening and no region is immune. Urgent measures are needed. From taxation to charges and operational efficiencies, all areas impacting the business must be examined for ways to reduce costs and drive efficiencies.
