36th ACAAI Annual Convention to be held on December 5-8
The 36th Annual Convention of the Air Cargo Agents Association of India (ACAAI) will be held from December 5 to 8, 2008 in Bahrain. The theme of the convention and registration process will be announced very soon, informed ACAAI sources.

Bahrain is located at the heart of the Gulf. It not only enables central access to the whole of the Gulf region; also makes Bahrain ideally positioned to serve the wider markets of the Middle East, Africa, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East.

Civil aviation ministry gets new secretary
 
M Madhavan Nambiar has been appointed as the secretary, ministry of civil aviation, government of India. He has been posted in place of Ashok Chawla, who has been appointed as secretary, department of economic affairs, ministry of finance.

Prior to this, Nambiar was special secretary, department of information technology, ministry of communications and information technology. He is a 1974 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. Nambiar is expected to take charge on September 17, 2008.

TCI acquires new logo
 
Transport Corporation of India launched its new corporate logo and brand line on September 4, 2008. Incidentally, in this year TCI completes its 50 years of service to Indian trade. It is a corporate brand that has mirrored the milestones in India’s evolution of infrastructure, said vice chairman and MD D.P. Agarwal. According to Agarwal, TCI, which began as a ‘One Man, One Truck, One Office’ company, has grown extensively over the years, to become a full-fledged logistics solutions provider with offerings of end-to-end solutions. The company aims to be a Rs. 20-billion organisation with the major focus on taking its supply chain solutions globally.

AFL Logistics launches retail-ready distribution facility
 
India’s leading integrated logistics service provider, AFL Logistics, opened its dedicated fashion retail facility on August 28, 2008, at its state-of-the-art warehouse in Bhiwandi near Mumbai. The new ‘facility within facility’ is designed for its client Madura Garments Lifestyle Retail Company, a division of Aditya Birla Nuvo. The facility was inaugurated by George Santacroce, CEO, MGLRCL, in the presence of Ashish Prasad, COO, MGLRCL, Susshruth Apshankar, head of supply chain, MGLRCL, and Juzar Mustan, CEO, AFL Logistics.

Commerce ministry to encourage auto export
 

Kamal Nath, the minister of commerce and industry, has stated that auto exports from India should reach $ 25 billion in the next decade. Delivering the keynote address on “Making India a Global Automotive Export Hub” at the Annual Convention of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), which was recently held in New Delhi, he said that the government would play its part by providing the "enabling policy framework".

According to the minister, Indian automobile industry today is all about scale. Maruti hopes to have a capacity of one million cars by 2010; Hyundai is looking at 600,000 cars in another year; Toyota is talking about 200,000 cars by year end; the Nissan Renault venture is planning a capacity of 400,000 cars and GM and Honda are setting up new plants, as is Tata for its Nano.

Arshiya International to invest Rs. 2,800 cr in FTWZ and rail business
 

Arshiya International has announced a whopping Rs. 2,800-crore investment in its Free Trade and Warehousing Zones (FTWZ) and rail business. Arshiya is planning to create five FTWZs, one each in Mumbai, Delhi, Nagpur and one in an undisclosed location in the south integrated with CFS and one in the Middle East. The first among five FTWZs is a 180-acre zone in Panvel near Mumbai at an investment cost of Rs. 1,200 crore, which will be completed by March 2011.

Capt. Mohan nominated chairman of NSB
 

Captain PVK Mohan of Seaways Group, Hyderabad, has been nominated chairman of the newly constituted National Shipping Board, for a two-year term. The NSB was constituted under Merchant Shipping Act and was first formed in 1959. Others in the board are: Commodore M Jitendran, CMD, Kochi Shipyard; S Velumani, chairman, Ennore Port; Dr. Vijayan, director, National Maritime Academy  and Prof. Ramaswamy, scientist. Youngest in the board, Capt. Mohan is also the first Master Mariner to become the chairman of NSB.
