Royal Jordanian increases frequency from three to five-weekly
flights from New Delhi
Royal Jordanian Airlines has increased its frequency from three to five
weekly flights from New Delhi and introduced new Airbus 319 on the Indian
sector. Another development that has taken place this year is the new visa
policy. Groups travelling to Jordan can now get visa on arrival with
bookings made by Jordan-based tour operators while individuals will have to
get their visas through the embassy. Taking this as a positive step to
promote tourism between the two countries The Jordanian tourism board is
planning to open its office either in India or appoint an Indian
representative this year.

Jet Airways and JetLite
introduce daily services to Srinagar
Jet Airways has introduced a new daily service on the Delhi-Srinagar
sector, where as JetLite has also introduced daily services on the Delhi-Srinagar
and Mumbai-Srinagar sectors respectively. These new flights have been
introduced to cater to the upcoming holiday traffic. The airlines will
operate a Boeing 737 aircraft on these sectors.

Etihad to launch
destination management company
Etihad Airways plans to launch its own destination management company (DMC).
The new DMC aims to provide a diverse range of leisure and business
activities for visitors to Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Etihad is currently in
discussion with local tourism partners, with the new DMC set to support the
development and enhancement of the capital’s tourism infrastructure. The new
DMC will also work closely with Etihad Holidays.

Terminal 3 at IGI Airport
to be ready before Commonwealth Games, says DIAL
The new integrated passenger terminal (Terminal 3) would be ready before
the Commonwealth Games 2010. This phase will have a total project outlay of
Rs 9,000 crore (USD 2 billion), which would enable Delhi airport to build a
capacity to handle 60 million passengers per annum from 2010, informed Arun
Arora, AVP, corporate communication, Delhi International Airport Limited
(DIAL). According to Arora, Terminal 3 would feature more than 75 aerobridges
for passenger embarkation and disembarkation. The check-in area would
feature more than 160 check-in counters. For international passengers more
than 90 desks would facilitate immigration procedures.

FICCI suggests 13-point Action Agenda
to lure 10 million foreign tourists by 2010
As the central and state governments and tourism industry players gear
themselves to double foreign tourist arrivals from 5.37 million in 2008 to
the targetted 10 million by 2010, FICCI has recommended a 13- point Action
Agenda to refurbish the Indian tourism product and market India as a
wholesome, safe and secure destination. FICCI’s tourism agenda focusses on
tourists’ security, confidence building measures, training of personnel, upgradation of infrastructure, rationalisation of taxes, familiarisation
tours of foreign buyers, new marketing strategies focussing on short haul
destination, easy availability of visa and some aggressive press and PR
activities.

PATA secures services of high profile
speakers for its Business Forum in Macau
PATA has secured the services of two high profile speakers from China
for the opening keynote addresses at this month's Business Forum in Macau
SAR. Sheng Li, general manager – visa, China and Dr John Liu, VP sales,
Google in Greater China, are to make the lead presentations covering the
Forum headline topic 'Discovering Opportunities in Tough Times'.
The plenary session 'Tapping Greater China Opportunities' will be headed by
Wang Yan, deputy director general – marketing and communications, China
National Tourism Administration. Cyril Ranque, VP, Expedia will lead the
discussion on e-Commerce strategies; and Umang Pabaru, MD, Nielsen in Greater
China, will be the lead presenter in the plenary session 'Leveraging Special
Interest Opportunities'. The closing session, 'Succeeding in Tough Times',
will feature a lead presentation from Andrew Herdman, director general,
Association of Asia Pacific Airlines.
The PATA Business Forum on April 20, hosted by the Macau Government Tourist
Office, is an integral part of the Association's annual meeting. The
200-plus delegates will also hear a welcome address from incoming PATA
Chairman Phornsiri Manoharn, who recently retired as governor of the Tourism
Authority of Thailand. Manoharn takes up her new role officially on April 19
at the PATA AGM.

170 foreign buyers from 40 countries
confirmed for GITB, still counting
The Great Indian Travel Bazaar (GITB), a three-day international travel
and tourism conference and exhibition from April 19 to 21, has so far
received confirmed participation from 170 foreign buyers from over 40
countries. With the event still a week ahead and in the final stage of
closing the numbers of foreign buyers are expected to further increase.
Also, so far over 150 Indian sellers, including tour operators, hotels and
state tourism boards, have confirmed their participation. Apart from
Rajasthan, the other confirmed states to be present at GITB are Madhya
Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir
and Jharkhand.

West Bengal government
sanctions Rs 35 crore for tourism development in 2009-10
The government of West Bengal has sanctioned Rs 35 crore for tourism in
its annual budget, which would be spent in the development of infrastructure
in the state, informed TVN Rao, MD, West Bengal Tourism Development
Corporation (WBTDC). In 2008-09 the budgetary allocation from the state
exchequer was Rs 28 crore. Currently, the corporation is undergoing upgrade
works for its 24 lodges across the state to 3 star categories to cater to
the demand from up market travellers in both domestic and international
sectors. WBTC has also started projects on the river Ganges to develop river
tourism. Recently, the corporation has also revamped its organisational set
up to implement the new tourism policy of the state government.

Royal Rajasthan on Wheels
slashes fair; introduces new packages
In a recent meeting with the national and international tour operators
and sales agents at the Bikaner House in New Delhi, Manjeet Singh, chairman
and managing director, Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) told
that Rajasthan Tourism envisages to run "Royal Trains" round the year except
the months of May and June in next tourism season while also informing that
in view of demand of sales agents and tourists the fare of RROW has been
proposed to make 590 American Dollar per night per person. He said that RTDC
will introduce some packages like 'Marriage on Board', 'Honeymoon on Royal
Rajasthan Wheels' etc. to lure domestic and foreign tourists. He further
elaborated that royal trains like 'Palace on Wheels', ' Royal Rajasthan on
Wheels' (RROW) are likely to commence their journey from August (earlier it
was September) to May (earlier it was April). In case the bookings are made,
these trains could be run in July as well.
Singh appealed tour operators and sales agents to mark new milestones in the
field of tourism by making optimum bookings. Looking the immense success of
Palace on Wheels and unavailability of booking up to 2010, a new train Royal
Rajasthan on Wheels (RROW) has been started and inspite low bookings, the
train has run in the first season. To make RROW successful like palace on
wheels the cooperation of tour operators and sales agents is required.
