Domestic air traffic reduces by 13.78 lakh in first quarter of 2009
According to statistics published by the ministry of civil aviation, government of India, domestic traffic has gone down in the first quarter of 2009 as compared to the same period in 2008. Domestic passengers carried by scheduled airlines of India in the first quarter of 2009 (January to March 2009) was 98.22 lakh while total domestic passengers carried by scheduled airlines of India in the first quarter of 2008 was 111.90 lakh. Meanwhile, Kingfisher Airlines has become the top domestic player for the first quarter of 2009 by carrying 26.67 lakh passengers, followed by Jet Airways (17.54 lakh), Air India – domestic (16.70 lakh), IndiGo (13.23 lakh), SpiceJet (11.85 lakh), JetLite (7.22 lakh), among others.

Air Arabia launches non-stop Sharjah-Goa operations
 
Air Arabia has given a further boost to the India-UAE sector by launching a non-stop service to Goa from Sharjah recently. The launch reflects Air Arabia’s growing expansion which happens to be the carrier’s 13th destination in India. The roundtrip flights will operate three times a week and Air Arabia is the only UAE-based international carrier to offer direct flights to Goa from the UAE. Air Arabia is offering fares starting at Rs. 3,653 from Goa to Sharjah, excluding taxes and other surcharges.

MDLR Airlines connects Jamshedpur with state capitals
 
MDLR Airlines has started services to Jamshedpur, making it the 10th destination in the airline’s network. The airline seamlessly connects Jamshedpur, which is an important business hub in India, to the state capitals of Ranchi, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chandigarh and Lucknow every morning and evening. Passengers would be subjected to all inclusive fares lower than train or taxi fares, which make air travel affordable and a preferred mode of transportation. This summer, MDLR Airlines plans to add two new aircraft and is also planning operations to Ludhiana and Ajmer Sharif from Delhi. It will also start daily services to Shimla, a second service to Delhi-Kullu-Delhi and Delhi-Goa-Delhi sector.

IndiGo launches flight status service on mobile
 
IndiGo recently launched the flight status service on mobile to enable its passengers to check flight status on mobile by sending an SMS of their flight details to a short code. In return, an automated SMS will be received by the passengers with details of flight departures and arrivals. This service will be charged as per the respective SMS charges of various mobile service providers.

Parliamentary polls delays IATO's decision on 25th convention venue
 
A final decision on the venue for the silver jubilee convention of Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) is pending due to the upcoming parliamentary elections. Gaur Kanjilal, executive director, IATO, said, “We are in active consultation with the Karnataka government since ITB Berlin and the state has shown keen interest in hosting the 25th IATO convention. We were asked about the convention’s format and various supports like accommodation, pre and post tour itineraries, etc. which have already been sent to them. Since most of the officials concerned are attending to their election duties, the final decision is expected after a couple of weeks.” Kanjilal indicated that other states like Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat may be considered if things don’t work out with Karnataka as these states too are interested in hosting the event.

A franchisee of Wyndham Hotel Group, one of the largest lodging franchisers of the world, Hotel Ramada Plaza is the first Ramada property in New Delhi. According to Ashok Mittal, director, Litolier Group, the 18-storied hotel building boasts of 419 guest rooms, which include 100 suites and apartments.

Jordan Tourism Board appoints Celebrations! as India representative
 
Jordan Tourism Board has appointed Celebrations! as its India representative. The India representative will be responsible for pursuing marketing activities for Jordan Tourism Board in India. They will also focus on organising familiarisation trips for trade professionals and roadshows across India. Flights between Amman and India are being operated by Emirates Airlines, Royal Jordanian, Gulf Air and Qatar Airways. Meanwhile, Jordan received 37,000 Indian visitors in 2008, according to statistics collected by Jordan Tourism Board.

Goa to expedite product development with Rs 90 crore budget for 2009-10
Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has chalked out a number of plans to develop its tourism industry with the state budgetary allocation of Rs 90 crore for the financial year 2009-10. According to Banjamin Braganza, managing director, GTDC, the state tourism development corporation plans to complete many projects this year including setting up of convention centres, an oceanarium and Paryatan Bhavan. The GTBC has also decided to upgrade Panjim Residency, Miramar Residency and Calangute Residency to star category with swimming pools, gyms and spas. The GTDC will spend Rs 20 crore for marketing in 2009-10.
