Kingfisher Airlines launches flights from New
Delhi to Hong Kong
Kingfisher
Airlines flagged off its inaugural flight on the New Delhi-Hong Kong route
making it the second international destination to be served by Kingfisher
Airlines out of New Delhi. The flights on this route will operate six times
a week. The flights on the New Delhi-Hong Kong route will be operated using
a brand new A330-200. Configured in two classes, Kingfisher First and
Kingfisher Class, the spacious full-length wide-bodied twin aisle cabin of
the A330-200 has gone to great lengths to make flying feel a more natural
and pleasurable experience.

Air India board appoints Gustav Baldauf,
currently working with Austrian Airlines , as COO
This is the
first time in Air India’s history when it has appointed a chief operating
officer (COO) to give a facelift to the national carrier. It is also
interesting that Air India is appointing an airline professional from
outside the country at its top position. Gustav Baldauf, an Austrian
national, currently, working with Austrian Airlines, will take charge as COO
of Air India shortly. The decision was taken on April 6 at Air India’s first
board meeting with the four newly appointed independent directors. Baldauf
will report to Arvind Yadav, CMD, Air India. The board has also decided to
present a comprehensive turnaround plan for the airline, which is projected
to incur a loss of over Rs 5,000 crore in 2009-10 within 30 days.

National Aviation Company of India to use
single airline code for both Air India and erstwhile Indian Airlines
The National
Aviation Company of India (NACIL), the umbrella company for the merged
entity of Air India and Indian Airlines, has announced that it would offer
Horizon Passenger Services System, in collaboration with SITA, the aviation
technology company, on a turnkey basis. The passenger services system will
be used to deliver a single airline code in order to allow the seamless
integration of the former domestic carrier Indian Airlines with Air India
for the first time since they merged in August 2007. It will also be
enabling Air India to meet the requirements for joining the Star Alliance.
The deal with 13.5 million passenger airline is valued at US$ 190 million
over ten years.

Foreign tourist arrivals up by 12.9% in March
2010
The foreign
tourist arrivals (FTAs) during the month of March 2010 grew 12.9 per cent at
4.72 lakh as compared to 4.18 lakh during the month of March 2009. The FTAs
during the period January-March 2010 were 15.63 lakh with a growth rate of
12.8 per cent, as compared to the FTAs of 13.86 lakh in January-March 2009.
The Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEE) in US$ terms during the month of March
2010 was US$ 1209 million as compared to FEE of US$ 867 million in March
2009.

Sri Lanka eyes 20 fold jump in Indian
arrivals by 2016
In 2010, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority aims to welcome over
10,000 Indians on Ramayana Trail to Sri Lanka. Moreover, it has also set an
ambitious plan to welcome 100,000 such Indian guests by 2016. To attain its
ambition 2016, the tourism board has now spread its focus to promote
Ramayana Trail from New Delhi to pan India basis. Presently, it is in the
process of educating eminent members of travel trade in groups of 30-35 in
Mumbai, Jaipur, Gujarat, New Delhi, Kolkata, and Hyderabad.

Abacus launches new version of Abacus Whiz to
benefit travel agents
Abacus, the
leading GDS provider, has recently unveiled the latest version of Abacus
Whiz in India, with an objective to provide travel agencies with greater
automation and efficiencies in work processes. According to the company
sources, Abacus Whiz is a Windows-based system that gives travel consultants

Amadeus and Transhotel rolls out Hotel Store solution in India
With effect from April 12, 2010, the travel
managers operating on the Amadeus platform will find a new icon on their
screen in form of the Amadeus Hotel Store application without any additional
costs. The new application offers travel agencies access to hotel
consolidator content that has over 50,000 hotels worldwide and also offers
an option for receiving upfront payments for both the hotel and the travel
agent. Amadeus has launched the new application in alliance with Transhotel
post a successful pilot project with over 30 eminent trade partners in
India.
