Air India to launch low cost airline after
mid-September
Air India is planning to launch a low
cost airline in September. According to Jitender Bhargava, executive
director - corporate communications, Air India, "More and more
passengers are becoming price sensitive in today's economic environment. We
can't see our passengers moving to other LCCs." He added that the airline
will launch low cost services under the Air India Express brand and the
service is expected to start in the second fortnight of September.

Jet Airways to launch Bangkok-Gaya-Varanasi
flights from October 6
Jet Airways will connect Bangkok with
Gaya and Varanasi on the Buddhist circuit with twice weekly flights from
October 6. The airline will operate twice weekly services on the sector on
Tuesdays and Fridays. These flights will allow people from the South Asian
region to visit the famous Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India.

'Mihin Lanka Airlines', Sri Lanka's LCC
begins direct services from Colombo to Bodh Gaya and Varanasi
Mihin Lanka Airlines, which is the budget
airline of Sri Lanka, started direct operations in the first week of August
from Bodh Gaya and Varanasi to Colombo. STIC Travel has been appointed GSA
for the airline in India. From Varanasi, Mihin Lanka Airlines flies once
every Wednesday and from Bodh Gaya, there are two flights every Sunday. The
flights are operated with Airbus 320 and have all economy class fares. It
also flies to Dubai and Kuwait via Colombo from both the cities and has
interlining fares for Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur on Sri Lankan
Airlines from Colombo.

ITTA suggests cess on fuel as an alternative
to taxing tourist vehicles

Indian Tourist Transporters Association (ITTA) has suggested the government to consider imposing a cess on
fuel, which may be credited to the state’s account, wherever the fuel is
sold. Speaking at a recent training of tourist drivers at Haryana Institute
of Public Administration organised jointly by ministry of tourism and ITTA, he also suggested that the system
of taxing tourist vehicles should be removed to make the travelling
experience hassle free.

DTCM offers 1,800 free visas to TAAI
delegates attending 58th convention
Dubai Department of
Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has made available 1,800 free visas
for TAAI delegates who will be travelling to participate in TAAI’s 58th
annual convention & exhibition to be held in Dubai from September 29 to
October 1. The exemption incentive totals to around Rs 72 lakh by an average
of Rs 4,000 as visa fee for 1,800 delegates. Other incentives involve free
transfers from airport to hotel and back, gift vouchers, meal coupons,
hosted dinner, entertainment and a host of other freebies.

Domestic traffic by Indian scheduled airlines
falls by 3 per cent in July
According to the
figures published by the DGCA office, the total domestic passengers carried
by scheduled airlines of India in July were 35.97 lakhs. It may be recalled
that total passengers carried by those airlines in June were 36.94 lakhs.
Kingfisher Airlines carried maximum passengers (8.29 lakhs) followed by Jet Airways
(6.81 lakhs), Air India –domestic (5.82 lakhs), IndiGo (5.02 lakhs),
SpiceJet (4.49 lakhs), JetLite (2.66 lakhs), GoAir (2.04 lakhs) and
Paramount Airways (0.72 lakhs).

MOT to impart training to drivers of tourist vehicles
To train tourist drivers for Commonwealth
Games,
Kumari Selja,
union minister of tourism, said that training would be
imparted to auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in Delhi. The training curriculum
is being finalised. Indian Tourist Transporters Association (ITTA)
has been requested to assist the ministry of tourism in achieving this goal.
An estimated 5,000 tourist drivers will be provided training before July
2010 in order to improve the overall service standards and tourist
experience in the run up to the Commonwealth Games 2010.

MP Tourism to inject Rs 7.5 crore in caravan
circuits
Madhya Pradesh is all set to gain by being
the first state to develop niche caravan tourism market and grab a lion’s
share in this segment. The Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development
Corporation (MPSTDC) is developing three caravan circuits at an estimated
cost of Rs 2-2.5 crore on each circuit, which will be partially functional
by the year-end. Once fully operational, these sites will attract both
international and domestic tourists with niche caravan products. The caravan circuits being developed are Bhopal-Tawa-Pachmarhi,
Orchha-Shivpuri-Khajuraho and Indore-Maheshwar-Omkareshwar-Mandu.
