Finnair to restart Mumbai-Helsinki service
from October 18
Finnair is restarting its Mumbai-Helsinki
operations from October 18. Finnair will be plying an Airbus 330, thrice a
week to Helsinki from Mumbai. Finnair is offering a special inaugural fare
of Rs 29,900 for an all-inclusive return ticket to Helsinki and there is
neither cancellation nor rescheduling charges on bookings. The airline had
started operations from Mumbai in June 2007, with flights five times a week
to Helsinki. However, in March 2009, the airline had discontinued with the
service due to operational losses.

Booking open for Maharajas' Express
Cox and Kings in a joint venture with the
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), launched the first
pan-India super-luxury train the Maharajas’ Express that will begin
operations from January 9, 2010. The JV company, Royale Indian Rail Tours
that will be operating and managing the luxury train, has started accepting
bookings for journeys starting post January 9. The luxury train comprises 23
coaches with five deluxe carriages (each with four cabins), six junior suite
carriages (each with three cabins), two suite carriages (each with two
suites) and one presidential suite exclusively in one carriage. All these
carriages will cater to 82 travellers.

Planete Balloon to start operations in India
Planete Balloon, a France-based company,
specialising in hot air balloon tourism recently announced that it would
start operations in India. At present, the company is working with Tiger
Balloon Safari, an Indian company, as a consultant. Initially, Planete
Balloon will start operations with two hot air balloons. The company is
looking for travel agencies, hotels and tour operators as business partners
to promote this activity in India.

IGI Airport to build separate terminal for
chartered flights and private jets
After commissioning
its new terminal T1D for domestic operations, IGI Airport is planning to
launch another terminal for chartered flights and private jet operations in
the next two years. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has invited
expression of interest from international players to construct and run
dedicated terminals. According to DIAL sources, the terminal would offer all
business facilities, including conference rooms, special lounges, hotel
reservations and catering. The new terminal will be built after demolishing
the T1B.

Government to form a group of ministers to
consider issues related to ATF price
The Government of
India has decided to form a group of ministers to consider the issues of
sales tax on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) levied by states, which varies from
state to state. It will also emphasise on reduction of base price of ATF by oil marketing
companies to bring it at par with international prices. The decision was
taken after a presentation made by Praful Patel, civil aviation minister,
before the union cabinet to highlight the issues pertaining to the civil
aviation sector. Patel highlighted major issues so that the government could
come up with solutions.

Concept Hospitality's first 'Fern' hotel
opens in Jaipur
The Fern - an Ecotel
hotel opened recently in Jaipur. Being the first 5-star Ecotel in Rajasthan,
the hotel is strategically located on Tonk Road, 4 km away from domestic and
international airports. The 85-room hotel, managed by Concept Hospitality,
was soft launched recently and is operational with 34 guest rooms. The hotel
is expected to be fully operational by mid-September.

First Inter State Regional Conference held in
New Delhi
As envisaged in the first 100-day agenda
of the Ministry to Tourism (MOT), the first Inter State Regional Conference
of the state tourism ministers of north and central states was held in New
Delhi. Inaugurating the conference, Kumari Selja, minister of tourism said,
“State level monitoring committee should be constituted in each state for
the speedy implementation of tourism projects. These committees should not
only regularly monitor but also send a quarterly or half yearly report to
the ministry of tourism for better assessment of projects.”

Canadian Tourism Commission opens office in
India
The Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) opened
its representative office in India to develop Canada as an important source
market for tourism. The CTC has appointed Buzz Travel Marketing India as its
Indian representative for all its marketing and promotional activities. The
tourism board plans to focus its marketing activities primarily in Delhi and
Mumbai and later incorporate other Indian cities that have the potential to
attract more visitors to Canada. As a part of the marketing plan, dinner and
cocktails were held in the national capital to introduce Canada and the
Canadian Tourism Commission to the travel industry.

J&K Tourism to organise Ladakh Festival from
September 1-15
With the aim to extend tourism season, the
Department of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir will organise the Ladakh Festival
from September 1-15. “Ladakh has a short tourist season of around two
months. By organising such festivals in September, we want to extend the
tourism season. We hope to succeed in our attempt as domestic hotels and
transporters associations have voluntarily worked out very attractive
packages for promoting the off season,” said Nawang Rigzin Jora, tourism
minister, Jammu and Kashmir.
