FAA to meet DGCA on March 2, 2009 to scrutinise civil aviation safety in India
A high level delegation of The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will visit India from March 2 to 9, 2009,  to meet the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) officials, airports and airlines to examine the present status of the safety measures taken by them. Sources said that FAA has its set parameter as regard to safety aspect to maintain its aviation bi-lateral relationship with other countries. Accordingly, it categorises the countries, on which basis the US civil aviation authority poses some restrictions. Currently, India is enjoying ‘A’ category status. Close to the developments, sources also said that owing to some recent happenings and ICAO evaluation, FAA has decided to re-look at the present state-of-affairs regarding aviation safety regulations being followed in India.

Slight improvement in domestic traffic witnessed in January 2009, says DGCA
According to the DGCA sources, total passengers carried by scheduled domestic airlines in January, 2009 were 33.26 lakhs. While in December 2008, total domestic passengers carried by the scheduled airlines were 33.23 lakhs.
 
The break-up of passengers carried by the airlines in January, 2009 is as follows: Air India (domestic) – 5.55 lakhs, Jet Airways –5.96 lakhs, Jet Lite – 2.41 lakhs, Kingfisher – 9.19 lakhs, Spice Jet – 3.93 lakhs, Paramount – 0.71 lakhs, Go Air – 0.81 lakhs, IndiGo – 4.57 lakhs, MDLR, 0.13 lakhs. The percentage share of the carriers in the month of January, 2009 was Air India (domestic) – 16.7, Jet Airways – 17.9, Jet Lite – 7.2, Kingfisher – 27.6, Spice Jet – 11.8, Paramount – 2.1, Go Air – 2.4, IndiGo – 13.7 and MDLR – 0.04.

Fairmont Jaipur to open in 2010

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has announced its second project in India, Fairmont Jaipur. Scheduled to open in 2010, the hotel, located in Rajasthan in the northwest of India, joins Fairmont Hyderabad as the luxury hotel brand’s first forays into the Indian market. The property is being developed by Capricorn Hospitality Investments India and its local partner.
 
The 248-room hotel will offer guests a variety of restaurants and bars, including a poolside bar, a 10,000 square foot willow stream spa, and a 5,000 square feet health club. To accommodate the area’s growing meetings market, there will also be a 48,500 square feet convention centre as well as gardens that can host over 1000 guests, perfect for business functions or weddings.

Visit Finland announces 28.9% increase in overnight stays and three-city workshop

Papori Bharati, marketing manager, Visit Finland – Finpro India announced a whopping increase of 28.9 per cent in overnight stays in the year 2008 as compared to 2007. The 2008 figure (Jan- Dec) stood at 63,912 against 49,598 in 2007. She also announced that the India Workshop – Fascinating Finland as a result of this encouraging trend, will see over 15 suppliers and regional tourist boards joining together for this promotion. The three city workshop (Delhi /Mumbai /Bengaluru) will begin from March first week 2009 and will be led by Arto Asikainen, head – Asia, Visit Finland.
 
Another welcome trend pointed out by her is that the workshop will see for the first time, suppliers from Finland’s neighbours such as Norway, St. Petersburg and Tallin. This is the result of Visit Finland’s continued success in the Indian market which has begun to be noticed by its neighbours. These suppliers have shown a keen interest in collaboration with Visit Finland to enter the high growth India market.

Galileo and Tourism Malaysia tie up to promote the Malaysian F-1

Introducing a new initiative to promote Sports Tourism in the GDS segment – Galileo, the leading Global Distribution System in India and Tourism Malaysia, the nodal government agency, today announced a joint promotion to boost Indian tourist arrivals to Malaysia and specifically promote the Malaysian F1. This promotion targetted for the travel agents would be valid till March 15, 2009.
 
This all India promotion provides an opportunity for the Indian travel agents to book Malaysia destination on any airline operating between India and Malaysia, thereby not limiting the choice for the travel agencies. Travel agencies will have the opportunity to book Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Jet Airways, Air India, Sri Lankan Airlines, Thai Airways, Air Asia or any other direct or indirect flights operating to Malaysia so as to qualify for the promotion. The winners for the promotion would be rewarded with a special F-1 tour coinciding with the forthcoming Malaysian F-1 Grandprix final race on April 5, 2009 at the Sepang Circuit.
