Associations call to form a National Commission on Tourism
 
At a landmark roundtable convened by WTTC India Initiative, all major travel & tourism associations of India, represented by the heads and office bearers, met at The Lalit, New Delhi to formulate a common minimum agenda that needs a supportive framework from government. Speaking with one voice, the industry representatives articulated issues to impress upon the central & state governments and reiterated that travel and tourism must be a top priority agenda for the Government of India. They called for formation of National Commission on Tourism headed by the Prime Minister of India.

The Gateway Hotels, part of Taj Group, signs its second hotel in Mumbai
 
The Gateway Hotels recently signed its second hotel in Mumbai. The 200 room property, located off the LBS Marg, will be developed by Sunshine Housing. Other facilities will include an all-day dining restaurant, a bar and banqueting facilities. With the latest addition, Gateway now takes its overall portfolio to 34 hotels across the country. Gateway also recently launched hotels in Jodhpur and Ahmedabad and announced a new project in Shirdi.

European hotel group Relais & Chateaux officially forays into India, inducts two more properties
 
France based Relais & Chateaux, an association of exclusive collection of over 475 of the finest hotels and restaurants across the globe, recently announced its Indian presence at a media briefing in New Delhi. The event was also used to introduce the latest addition to its India portfolio, Sher Bagh, Ranthambhore and The Serai, Jaisalmer from SUJAN Luxury Hotels. With the latest addition, Relais & Chateaux now boasts of five properties in its kitty including Mahua Kothi, a jungle lodge in Madhya Pradesh and Malabar House and Nileshwar Hermitage in Kerala.

Foreign tourist arrivals up by 16.4 per cent in January
 
The year 2010 has picked further momentum after having started on a bullish note, unlike the dismal start to year 2009. The foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) have witnessed been a growth of 16.4 per cent in January 2010 over January 2009 as compared to a negative growth of 17.6 per cent registered in January 2009 over January 2008. The FTAs during the month of January 2010 were 4.91 lakh as compared to FTAs of 4.22 lakh during the month of January 2009. To a large extent, the trend of substantial growth in FTAs observed during December 2009 (21 per cent) continued in January 2010 with a growth rate of 16.4 per cent.

70 per cent rooms completed for Commonwealth Games 2010 in national capital region
 
The recent ministerial review of the hotel projects coming up for the CWG has indicated that over 7,307 rooms have been completed, which is 70 per cent of the overall 10,540 rooms falling under the definite category. The said review was conducted at the XXVIIth meeting of the ‘Task Force’ constituted for the purpose of monitoring the augmentation of hotel accommodation in the NCR held on January 27, 2010.

India Tourism wins laurel for active tourism promotion in Japan
 
The Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) has bestowed a Certificate of Appreciation on India Tourism (Tokyo) on February 17, 2010 for its very active promotion of tourism to India and great contribution to the Japanese market. It’s the first such occasion, when JATA has given such recognition to any tourism board. The Plaque was given jointly by Takashi Sasaki, vice-chairman, JATA and Makoto Onishi, chairman, Japan India Tourism Promotion Committee, JATA.
