Airline industry in India grew 400% in last 7 years: Vayalar Ravi
 
As India celebrates 100 years of the first commercial flight, Civil Aviation Minister, Vayalar Ravi said that the airline industry in India grew by about 400 per cent in the last seven years. With a domestic passenger base of over 50 million, India now ranks fourth after USA, China and Japan. Ravi also said that the domestic passenger growth is expected to continue to grow at the rate of 9-10 per cent and is expected to reach a level of 180 million passengers by the year 2015 and 270-300 million by 2020.

Air India switches over to a single code from Feb 27
 
In a move that will expedite the process of it becoming an active member of the STAR alliance, Air India has announced the switch over to a single AI code for all its domestic and international operations from February 27, 2011. Accordingly, IATA ticket codes of Air India (098) and erstwhile Indian Airlines (058) will be merged to form a single AI (098) ticket code. In a statement, the airline said that elaborate arrangements are being put in place to inform the passengers about their revised flight numbers through messages, telephone calls and through travel agents. At the airports too, flight information display boards will show both old and new flight numbers.

Indian carriers flew over 13 million passengers on international routes in 2010: DGCA
 
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Indian carriers flew a total 13,028,514 passengers to international destinations in 2010, compared to 11,128,096 passengers in 2009, thereby registering a growth of 17.1 per cent. During this period, the airlines enjoyed a 72.8 per cent load factor. Recently, the Civil Aviation Ministry said that travel of international passengers to and from India to reach 50 million by the year 2015.

Kingfisher to launch 11 new flights on domestic routes from March 1, 2011
 
Kingfisher Airline has announced the launch of 11 new flights, including new flights on Delhi-Ranchi-Patna-Delhi sector and additional flights on Delhi-Amritsar, Delhi-Srinagar and Delhi-Guwahati-Imphal-Guwahati-Delhi sectors. While bookings are open, these flights will come into effect from March 1, 2011. In addition, the airline is also offering free award tickets on bookings made and travel undertaken before April 10, 2011.

Competition Committee of India asks ‘Zero’ Airlines to give their comments on its report: TAAI
 
According to a communication released by Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), acting on a case filed by the association with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) against some airlines for reducing ticketing commission paid to the travel agents to ‘Zero’, CCI has now submitted its report and directed the concerned airlines to submit their comments on its report within 15 days and thereafter appear before the CCI on 3rd March 2011.

TTF&OTM 2011 Delhi opens to a rousing start 
 
TTF & OTM 2011 Delhi, country’s premium travel trade show opened to a great start on February 24, 2011. The three day show (24-26 February) has attracted over 300 exhibitors, up from 250 last year. 27 countries have been represented including 14 National Tourism Offices. Besides exhibitors from 17 states, including 9 states tourism Boards, have come to showcase their products. NTO


China registers a record growth of more than 22% in arrivals from India
 
According to figures received from China National Tourist Office (CNTO), China has registered a record growth of more than 22 per cent in visitor arrivals from India, thanks to a host of initiatives taken by the NTO to develop the India market. The destination has bounced back after negative growth (5.6%) registered in 2008 over the previous year and a small growth (2.8%) recorded in 2009. The Indian visitor numbers grew by more than 100,000 increasing from 449,000 in 2009 to over 549,000 in 2010.

Malaysia targets 20 % growth from India in 2011
 
After receiving 6,90,000 Indian arrivals in 2010, a growth of 17 per cent; Tourism Malaysia is targeting a growth of 20-22 per cent for this year. Currently, the tourism board is on its annual sales mission (themed as ‘Nature at its Best, Luxury at its Finest) in Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and New Delhi.
