Domestic air traffic in 2008 falls by 5 per cent, says ministry of civil aviation
 
The domestic air traffic has recorded about 5 per cent fall in 2008 as compared to 2007. The figures, recently published by the ministry of civil aviation, unveiled that the total passengers flown by the domestic carriers in 2008 were 40.77 million, which was 42.85 million in 2007. For the year 2008, the airline wise break-up is as follows: Air India (domestic) – 6.63 million, Jet Airways –8.76 million, Jet Lite – 3.25 million, Deccan – 4.97 million, Kingfisher – 6.28 million, Spice Jet – 4.06 million, Paramount – .63 million, Go Air – 1.36 million and IndiGo – 4.74 million. (Deccan figures till November, 2008).

SriLankan has announced special fares to the tropical destinations of Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong & Colombo at unbeatable prices. People taking their flight from Mumbai can travel to these locations for as low as Rs. 12,635 onwards. The price on Mumbai – Colombo route is Rs 12,635, on Mumbai–Bangkok, Mumbai–Singapore and Mumbai-Kuala Lumpur is Rs. 14,211. Mumbai – Hong Kong is priced at Rs. 15,790. These fares are valid until March 31, 2009 and are inclusive of YQ tax {fuel surcharge}.

Swiss tours launches online booking website for travel agents
Swiss tours have introduced an online booking website solely for the travel agents. By logging on to agent.swisstoursonline.com, the travel agent can make bookings for Swiss Pass, hotels, apartments, bus and rail tickets, tickets for mountain excursions and other activities. This online booking will enable agents to have their own login ids. The website will provide all details on Switzerland as a destination and information on holiday packages.

Pradip Lulla takes over as TAFI President

The managing committee meeting held recently in Mumbai, unanimously decided that Pradip Lulla will be taking over as president of Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI). It was also decided to organise its forthcoming annual convention from August 6 to 9, 2009. He was earlier serving the association as vice president. The venue of the annual convention, however, is yet to be finalised.

Six 'Hyatt Place Hotels' to come up in India by 2011

Global Hyatt Corporation, operating in India since 1982, recently announced a major expansion initiative. Spread over the next four years, 20 new properties including six ‘Hyatt Place Hotels’ will open in the leading markets in India and will also penetrate tier two and tier three cities. India also becomes the first market outside North America, where Hyatt has brought its new upper mid-segment brand ‘Hyatt Place’. The six Hyatt Place Hotels, to be launched by 2011, will be developed under a joint venture with real estate major Emaar MGF. A total of 950 rooms will be developed across Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Mysore, Lucknow, Indore and Mangalore, for which land has already been acquired. The remaining 14 hotels will be full service hotels under Hyatt Regency, Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt brands.

Tourism Thailand's new website helps plan tour itineraries
 
Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently launched its website www.amazingthailand.co.in. The new website provides comprehensive information of various Thai tourism products including details on the various destinations within Thailand. The new website is soon expected to boast features that will help tour operators and travel agents construct tour itineraries, on-line accreditation etc. when the second phase of website development is complete. According to Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, director, Tourism Authority of Thailand, based in New Delhi, India, “The website was initially designed taking consumers in mind. However, we are planning to add more features to enable the website to be a useful tool for travel agents in Phase II of website development. Once the second phase of development is complete, the website will help travel agents construct tour itineraries with ease, receive e-newsletters from us on a regular basis as well as allow them to receive online accreditation as an Amazing Thailand Champion Agent.”
