Emirates offers special packages for Mumbai-Dubai travellers
 
Emirates Airlines, in partnership with Atlantis, Palm Jumeirah's flagship resort, is offering special packages for all travellers from Mumbai, valid until April 30, 2009. The offer, which starts at Rs 66,189 onwards for Economy Class includes return airfare from Mumbai to Dubai as well as three night's accommodation plus an extra complimentary night. Packages for First Class travel start from Rs 110,069 while Business Class package starts from Rs 88,068.

Agents decide to continue non-cooperation against Singapore Airlines
 
At a joint meeting organised on January 22 in New Delhi, the leaders and members of TAAI, TAFI, IAAI, ETAA, IATO and ADTOI declared that the boycott, which they started against Singapore Airlines and Silk Air from December 29, 2008 and January 1, 2009 respectively demanding 5 per cent commission on gross fare would be further strengthened. The associations also decided that they would organise demonstrations in front of the airlines' offices in different cities. A central programme would also be organised later on. Pradip Lulla, president, TAFI informed that on January 29 the association will organise a rally in Mumbai, in which all the travel associations and leaders from various political parties will participate to highlight the commission issue.

Third ADTOI annual convention digresses from its theme of interstate tourism
The recently concluded convention cum exhibition of Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India (ADTOI) stressed upon synergy among various travel associations. With its theme of interstate tourism, the event saw participation of representatives from the centre, states, hotels and tour companies. On the occasion, a demand was made that tourism should be included in the concurrent list of Indian Constitution, which will enable both the centre and states to legislate on the subject of tourism. The convention provided a good opportunity to discuss the issue of interstate tourism. But it was astonishing that the convention hardly discussed the issues of interstate tourism such as connectivity, road tax, border entry taxes and harassment of tourists, etc.

Sri Lanka Tourism signs MOU with Gujarat government

In order to promote tourism, Sri Lanka has signed an MOU with the Gujarat government. Narendra Modi, chief minister, Gujarat, who is also the chief architect of the Vibrant Gujarat event has announced that Gujarat will develop Buddhist sites in the state promoting Buddhist studies and convene an international conference on Buddhism in his fast developing state. A Memorandum of Understanding on tourism, providing for cooperation on tourism related fields between Gujarat and Sri Lanka was signed and exchanged between Modi and Milinda Moragoda, minister – tourism, Sri Lanka. A Sri Lankan delegation had come to participate in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit at Ahmedabad. Gujarat is keenly interested in developing coastal tourism and expects Sri Lankan expertise as well as investment to develop resorts in Gujarat.

Haryana Tourism launches multi-purpose hall at Tilyar Lake in Rohtak

After launching Rajhans Convention Centre at Surajkund, Haryana Tourism recently launched a multi-purpose hall at Tilyar Lake in Rohtak. The multi-purpose hall has been built by the government of Haryana at the cost of Rs 50 million. The hall has a seating capacity of 700 persons. Last year the state government launched a multi-purpose hall at Baya Tourist Complex, Bhiwani, which can accommodate up to 350 persons.

Uttarakhand to organise international carnivals on snowfall and ice-skating

To woo more tourists both international and domestic, the government of Uttarakhand has decided to promote snowfall and ice-skating in the state. Addressing the annual convention of the Adventure Tour Operators of India (ATOAI), which was held in Dehradun from January 16 to 18, 2009. Prakash Pant, minister of tourism, government of Uttarakhand informed that the international snowfall carnival will be organised from March 6-8, 2009 and ice-skating carnival will be held from May 1-6, 2009 at Auli and Dehradun respectively. The Uttarakhand government also decided to launch artificial snowfall and ice-skating set ups at Auli and Dehradun with an investment of Rs.20 crore and Rs.50 crore.
