ATOAI aims to further expand its reach
 
With the theme Beyond the Himalaya, ATOAI showcased its ambitious plans to spread it wings throughout the country at its eighth annual convention. Several representatives from different regions marked their presence in the convention. Having announced the soft launch of its state level representation in Maharashtra, the association now aims to build similar representation units in states of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, and J&K.

Choice International buys Choice India
 
In a landmark development, leading global lodging franchisor, Choice Hotels International (CHI) has acquired the remaining 60 per cent ownership interest in Choice Hospitality India. CHI now plans to focus extensive development resources on growing its presence in India, which currently stands at 28 hotels. Vilas Pawar remains chief executive officer for Choice Hospitality India, who will now report to Mark Pearce, vice-president, international operations for Choice Hotels International.

Carlson acquires majority stake in RHW
 
Carlson Hotels Worldwide, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, has signed an agreement to increase its stake in RHW Hotel Management Services (RHW) from 13 per cent to 87 per cent. RHW is the hotel management and consultancy services company which has successfully managed Carlson-branded hotels in India since 1998. Carlson is acquiring the shares from Umak Investment Company. The remaining 13 per cent is held by private investors.

Foreign tourist arrivals in December 09 increase by 21 per cent
 
The foreign tourist arrival (FTAs) during the month of December 2009 was 6.46 lakh as compared to FTAs of 5.34 lakh in December 2008. The growth rate in FTAs in December 2009 over December 2008 is up by 21 per cent, which is highest positive growth registered in any month of 2009. In fact, with hand holding from the Ministry of Tourism, the inbound segment has registered better growth rate for 2009 at (-) 3.3 per cent vis-à-vis UNWTO’s projected growth rate of (-) 4-6 per cent for the world travel economy.

MOT organises Incredible India roadshow in Johannesburg to promote CWG 2010
 
The Ministry of Tourism organised an Incredible India roadshow in Johannesburg to promote Commonwealth Games 2010 on January 12, 2010, which coincided with the passing of the Queen's Baton. During this event, 10 double decker buses wrapped in Incredible India images were flagged off by M Mashabane, Minister of International Relation and Cooperation, Government of South Africa along with Vikram Doraiswamy, Consul General of India and T S .Darbari, Joint Director General, Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.

Three foreign destinations flock to partner Surajkund Mela
 
Tajikistan, Thailand and Egypt have partnered the Surajkund Crafts Mela, a joint venture of Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Textiles and the Government of Haryana, which will kickstart its 24th yearly edition at Faridabad from February 1-15. They will organise cultural performances, stalls in the food court, distribute publicity material and station their crafts persons in different parts of the Mela ground. Rajasthan has been chosen as the theme state. Over 400 crafts person from far flung areas of country will turn up this year to become the proud ambassador of their regions at the show.
