IndiGo orders 180 Airbus aircraft, creates aviation history
 
In the largest deal in civil aviation history, low-cost carrier IndiGo has placed an order of 180 aircraft with Airbus, valued at $15.6 billion. As per the Memorandum of Understanding signed, IndiGo will acquire 150 Airbus A320 ‘neo’ series which incorporate more efficient engines, and the rest 30 will be standard A320s. The airplanes are expected to be delivered between 2016 and 2025. Presently, IndiGo operates a fleet of 34 Airbus A320, connecting 24 domestic destinations.

Buddha Air launches Kathmandu to Lucknow operations from January 7; Varanasi flights likely from July 16
 
Nepal based Buddha Air has announced the launch of three weekly flights between Kathmandu and Lucknow. The airline will operate ATR 42-320 (47 seater) aircraft on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays between the two destinations. Service will be gradually upgraded to daily flights in due course. Speaking to TravTalk, the airline said that it is also planning to operate Kathmandu-Varanasi-Kathmandu flights from July 16, 2011.

Travelocity India launches domestic flight booking engine
 
Travelocity India, one among the leading players in the online travel space in India, launched a search engine of domestic flights on 7 January 2011. The new domestic flight booking engine (available at www.travelocity.co.in) will display the lowest fare available at a given time integrating results displayed by the airlines and other OTAs on a user friendly format. In the second phase, latter in 2011, the company will integrate the interests of travel agents, who then could also be rewarded for using the said booking engine.

Travelchacha.com, one of leading online travel company in India, announced expansion beyond Delhi, Agra and Goa with a new office in Southern India. It opened its new office in Kochi, Kerala. Vikram Madhok appointed as Vice Chairman of WTTCII for the year 2011
 
The World Travel and Tourism Council, India Initiative (WTTCII), announced appointment of Vikram Madhok, Managing Director, Abercrombie & Kent India as Vice Chairman of the council for the year 2011. It had earlier appointed Vivek Nair, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts as the Chairperson of the Council for the year 2011 at the Annual General Meeting held in New Delhi on 11 December. Further, Sujit Banerjee, Former Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, has taken over as the Secretary General of the council.

Carlson to expand its portfolio with 19 new properties in 2011 in India
 
International hospitality player Carlson which operates luxury chain Radisson is rolling out plans to introduce 19 new properties in India this year with plans to operate 100 hotels by 2015. It is focusing on Delhi, Mumbai (two properties) and Coimbatore (one property) for the new projects. However, the investment details were kept under covers.

Himachal Pradesh records 16% growth with over 13 million tourists in 2010
 
As per the latest figures released by Himachal Pradesh tourism board, over 13 million tourists visited the state in 2010 as compared to 11 million in 2009; thus recording a growth of 16 per cent. Similarly, the foreign tourist arrival figures increased from 4,00,583 in 2009 to 454,851 in 2010 registering an increase of 13 per cent in a year.

J&K Tourism to incentivise local trade for participating in trade fares and exhibitions
 
Jammu & Kashmir Tourism is currently working out a scheme that will provide financial assistance to local travel trade who will participate in domestic and international trade fairs and exhibitions to promote the destination, informed Farooq Shah, Director Tourism, Kashmir. The new scheme is expected to be in force in the new financial year. Aimed at revitalising state’s economic mainstay tourism sector the scheme is expected to lure state’s tourism trade to available subsidies and aggressively market their tourism products.

Switzerland Tourism to spend additional 35% to boost arrivals from India
 
Switzerland Tourism, at its media workshop in Delhi earlier this week, introduced two new regions as partners - Ticino, the Italian speaking region in the South of Switzerland which has a Mediterranean lifestyle with Swiss quality and the French speaking Lake Geneva Region parts of which is known as the Swiss Riviera. Together with theses new destinations, Switzerland is planning to spend an additional 35 per cent towards marketing expenditure to boost growth from the India market.
