Finnair to fly daily on Delhi-Helsinki route
later this year
Finnair will
increase its services on the Delhi-Helsinki route from six flights per week
at present to daily flights beginning later this year. In fact, the airline
recently deployed an all-new fleet on this sector, after it recorded a
growth in the load factor. The new aircraft is barely six-month-old. In
addition, the airline is also looking at resuming services to Mumbai and
expanding its network to new destinations like Chennai, Bengaluru and
Hyderabad.

International visitor arrivals to South Asia
grows by 17% in the first quarter of 2010, FTAs in India up by 15.5% in May

Asia Travel Association (PATA) announced the international visitor arrival
results for the first quarter of 2010. International visitor arrivals to
South Asia, including India, grew by 17% year-on-year in the first quarter
of this year. Travel demand in Asia Pacific picked up strongly in the first
quarter of the year, registering a 10% increase from the same quarter in
2009. Meanwhile, foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) during May 2010 were 3.45
lakh as compared to FTAs of 2.99 lakh during the corresponding period last
year. There has been a growth of 15.5 per cent in May 2010 over May 2009 as
compared to a negative growth of 1.9 per cent registered in May 2009 over
May 2008. Growth rate in FTAs during May 2010 at 15.5 per cent is much
higher than that 1.7 per cent that was observed during April 2010. Further,
since the launch of the visa-on-arrival (VoA) scheme in January 2010, a
total number of 2750 VoAs had been issued. The number of visas issued under
this scheme, during January-May 2010 for nationals of the five countries
include 884 visas for Singapore, 736 visas for Finland, 660 visas for New
Zealand, 453 visas for Japan and 117 visas for Luxembourg.

Malaysian High Commission opens visa
application centre in Mumbai, to open nine more centres across India
In a move towards improving the services for Indian travellers, Tan Seng
Sung, Malaysian High Commissioner in India, recently inaugurated the first
Malaysian visa application centre (VAC) at Chowpatty Bandstand in Mumbai.
The Malaysian High Commission is planning to open nine such VACs across
India with Hyderabad and Mumbai being the first two centres in the series.
This initiative is aimed to further enhance the image of Malaysia as a
‘round-the-year destination’ for all travel segments. Meanwhile,
Malaysia Tourism is targetting 650,000 arrivals from
India this year. To achieve the same, it has set sight to target niche
products like wedding market from India. In the last two months, the
NTO has already taken as many as 12 wedding planners from India to showcase
possible wedding venues in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi in Malaysia and
also understand the requirements of an Indian wedding.

Jordan Tourism to embark on a seven-city
roadshow next month
Come July 12, Jordan Tourism Board,
represented in India by Celebrations!, will embark on a seven-city trade
roadshow in India. Beginning from the national capital on July 12, JTB,
along with Jordanian suppliers, will travel to Kolkata (July 13), Chennai
(July 15), Cochin (July 16), Bengaluru (July 17), Goa (July 19) and Mumbai
(July 20). So far, 12 tour operators from Jordan have confirmed their
participation for the roadshow.

MOT sanctions Rs 12.81 crore to boost
adventure tourism in North East
As talks are going on for the development
of North East India tourist circuit, the government sanctioned a whopping Rs
12.81 crore to boost adventure tourism here. The Ministry of Tourism has
allotted Rs 4.94 crore for the construction of an eco and adventure centre
at Chemchi in Sikkim. It will also invest Rs 2.98 crore in a sports project
at Aizwal in Mizoram in 2009-10. A high altitude trekking project worth Rs
0.94 crore is likely to come up at Sikkim.
