AIRPORTS

Government of Punjab gets approval to build Greenfield Airport in Ludhiana
Recently, the government of Punjab received a communication from the ministries of defence and civil aviation giving their final approval to the state’s much desired project of a Greenfield Airport in Ludhiana. After getting approval from the ministries Bengal Aerotropolis Projects (BAPL), is now planning to start construction of the Rs 1750 crore project (for the first phase) by the end of 2009. BAPL is likely to complete the techno-economic feasibility study in the next four to six months. It may be recalled that BAPL has also started work on developing India's first airport city (aerotropolis) project near Durgapur in West Bengal by 2011.

ATOAI elects new office-bearers' team for two years
The Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) elected a new team of Office Bearers and Executive Committee members in the recently held Annual General Meeting (AGM) at IIC, Lodi Road. ATOAI is a national body comprising 150 tour operators promoting adventure and eco-tourism in India.

Tejbir Singh Anand, managing director, Holiday Moods Adventures has been elected as the president of ATOAI. Anand was the honorary treasurer of the association for the last two consecutive terms. Keeping in mind the workload, ATOAI also created a new post of senior vice president in the recently held AGM. Mandip Singh Soin, founder president, IBEX Expeditions has been nominated and elected as the senior vice president while Ravi Kalra, managing director, Travel Inn who earlier was the honorary secretary, has been elected as the vice president of ATOAI. Akshay Kumar, CEO, Mercury Himalayan Explorations and Mohan Tickoo, managing director, Kash Venture Travels have been elected as the
honorary secretary and honorary treasurer respectively.

Ajeet Bajaj, managing director, Snow Leopard Adventures, Sanjay Basu, managing director, Far Horizon Tours, Vishwas Makhija, managing director, India Insight Tours and Amit Sankhala, managing director, Dynamic Tours, are the newly elected executive committee members. Capt. Swadesh, managing director, Shikhar Travels, and founder president of ATOAI has been elected as the advisor to the association.

AVIATION


Domestic air passenger traffic increased in February 2009, says ministry of civil aviation
According to the statistics published by the ministry of civil aviation for the month of February 2009, the total domestic passengers carried by the scheduled airlines of India in this month were 33.36 lakh. The total passengers carried by domestic airlines in the month of January 2009 were 33.26 lakh. The break-up for the month of February, 2009 is as follows: Air India (domestic)– 5.74 lakh, Jet Airways –5.97 lakh, Jet Lite – 2.49 lakh, Kingfisher – 9.04 lakh, Spice Jet – 4.13 lakh, Paramount – 0.61 lakh, Go Air – 0.84 lakh and IndiGo – 4.41 lakh. The percentage share of the carriers in the month of February 2009 was: Air India (domestic) 17.2 per cent, Jet Airways – 17.9 per cent, JetLite – 7.5 per cent, Kingfisher – 27.1 per cent, SpiceJet – 12.4 per cent, Paramount – 1.8 per cent, Go Air – 2.5 per cent and IndiGo – 13.2 per cent.

Kerala focusses on nature based tourism and eco-tourism

Kerala has been focussing on improvement of infrastructure and facilities for nature based tourism and eco-tourism. The state has branded this initiative as ‘Kerala by Nature’. Under this initiative more than 10 wildlife sanctuaries are being made more tourism friendly. By the next season, Kerala will present before the industry an array of nature experiences ranging from camping to trekking, bird watching, wildlife viewing. On the other front, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation has embarked on a rebranding and modernising drive. KTDC also plans to increase rooms in its premier property in Munnar.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli to develop golf course, convention centre

The department of tourism, Dadra and Nagar Haveli administration is giving high priority to tourism development. The administration has planned to develop a golf course on public private partnership basis at Talavali. The golf course will be spread over 150 acres of land. The land for this purpose has already been acquired by the Union Territory Administration. A convention centre will also be built at Luhari. The convention centre will be built in 30 acres of land and its sitting capacity will be 2,500 pax. The administration has already made land available for this purpose. Dadra and Nagar Haveli attracts around 5.5 lakh tourists each year, and the administration is targetting to increase this number by 10 per cent.
