AirAsia launches Mumbai-Kuala Lumpur services at Re 1
AirAsia launched direct operations from Mumbai to Kuala Lumpur on May 6, 2010 at an inaugural price of Re 1 per ticket. Apart from airport taxes, fliers will have to pay Re 1 as base fare. This offer is valid for a week. AirAsia will be servicing the route with four direct flights a week through its long haul, low fare affiliate AirAsia X. The airliner also plans to start operations between Bangkok-Delhi and operations to KL from Amritsar, Chennai and Delhi.

Latest UNWTO report confirms upward trend in international tourism
According to the April Interim Update of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, international tourist arrivals are estimated to have increased by 7 per cent in the first two months of 2010. This follows the upturn already registered in the last quarter of 2009 when arrivals grew by 2 per cent after 14 consecutive months of negative results. Growth was particularly strong in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. UNWTO forecasts international tourist arrivals to grow by 3 to 4 per cent in 2010.

Sarovar opens 'Hometel Chandigarh'
 
Sarovar Hotels & Resorts announced the opening of Hometel Chandigarh, city’s first branded economy hotel and Sarovar’s fourth Hometel in the country. With the latest addition the hotel company now boasts of 45 properties currently operating across different brands in its portfolio. The 114-room hotel, owned and managed by Sarovar, also offers banquet space spread over 8200 sq ft. The property is located in the heart of city’s industrial area, within 10 minutes from the railway station and airport.

'aloft' all set for its debut in India next month
 
Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ ‘aloft’ brand readying for its debut in India. The hotel company is openning two ‘aloft’ hotels next month with Urbanedge Hotels. The 129-room Chennai Aloft is openning in the first week of June followed by the 166-room Bangalore property, slated to open by mid-June, 2010. Urbanedge is establishing three more aloft properties in Coimbatore, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh; currently under different stage of development, all these properties will open doors by the end of this fiscal.

InterGlobe and Accor to open three hotels at Delhi Aerocity from 2011
 
InterGlobe and Accor are together developing three hotel projects at the Delhi Aerocity, IGI Airport. These hotels will be operational from 2011. The three properties of InterGlobe and Accor will be an Ibis hotel in the economy segment with 465 rooms, a Novotel hotel with 400 rooms in the first class segment, and a Pullman hotel in the upscale segment with 270 rooms. All three projects are under construction now. The Ibis hotel will open in the first quarter of 2011, while the other two hotels will be open in the second quarter of 2012.

Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Environment and Forests clarified that Tiger Reserves in India will remain open for tourism
 
Quashing the various reports in both national and international media that the Government was planning to stop tourism activities in the country’s Tiger Reserves. The Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Environment and Forests clarified that there is no such plan or proposal and Tiger Reserves in India to remain open for tourism. Further, the MOT emphasises that development and promotion of tourism is on a sustainable and responsible basis, which safeguards the environmental interest as laid down in the National Tourism Policy 2002.

Thailand to renew tourist visa fee exemption scheme from May 11 onwards till March 31, 2011
 
Thailand has restored the tourist visa fee exemption scheme that had expired on 4 March 2010, which now will be renewed from 11 May 2010 and will remain in force till 31 March 2011.The said scheme will also cover exemption of the fee for visa on arrival provided by the Immigration Bureau of Thailand at designated checkpoints. However, the exemption scheme is not extended to other types of visas that include non-immigrant visa and the transit visa.

Switzerland Tourism to host workshop for agents in September
 
In September, Switzerland Tourism will be holding a workshop in Switzerland, where 30-35 agents from India will be taken to Switzerland as part of its sustained travel experience programme. It has also inducted a new managing director for India, which will up all initiatives towards promoting Switzerland in India, as the Indian market has huge potentials to attract the larger number of Indian arrivals to Switzerland.
