Qatar Airways begins operations to Amritsar and Goa
 
Qatar Airways recently launched flights to two new destinations namely Amritsar and Goa. Qatar Airways’ maiden flight to Punjab landed at Amritsar on October 12. Two weeks later, the airline launched scheduled flights to Goa, heralding the arrival of Qatar Airways. It is the only full-service scheduled global carrier to Amritsar and Goa, with both of them being served four-times-a-week from the airline’s Doha hub. Qatar Airways has increased capacity to India to 64 flights a week spread across 10 cities.

Domestic traffic registers 15 per cent increase in October compared to September
 
The total number of domestic passengers carried by the scheduled airlines of India in October has witnessed a 15 per cent growth as compared to September. The total passengers carried by the scheduled domestic airlines in October were 39.69 lakhs as against 35.05 lakhs in the previous month.

Kingfisher carried the highest number of passengers in October (8.23 lakhs), followed by Jet Airways (7.85 lakhs), Air India domestic (7.40 lakhs), IndiGo (5.40 lakhs), SpiceJet (4.91 lakhs), JetLite (3.14 lakhs), GoAir (2.15 lakhs) and Paramount (0.61 lakhs).

AIRPORT


Hyderabad Airport signs agreement to build aviation maintenance and training centre
 
GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) has signed an agreement with the world’s leading aircraft engine manufacturer, CFM International, to establish a new CFM56 maintenance training centre.

This training centre will commence operations in January 2010 and will be located in the GMR Aerospace Park. It is being developed in the 250 acre aviation SEZ which forms part of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport complex. The aviation SEZ has been recently notified by the Government of India.

Aitken Spence Hotels, which is part of Aitken Spence PLC is all set to consolidate its presence in India with launch of five new properties within next two years. Ministry of Tourism wins World Travel Award for the best destination marketing campaign at WTM

 
At World Travel Market (WTM), which is one of most premier international travel event, the Incredible India campaign of Ministry of Tourism (MOT) has won the World Travel Award for the best destination marketing campaign. Kumari Selja, Union minister of tourism received the award at the glittering event organised in London on October 9. Devesh Chaturvedi, additional director general, MOT, and Jagdish Chander, director, India Tourism, London, were present during the ceremony.

The MOT also won the Incredible India campaign, Asian Guild Award at the House of Lords, which recognises the contribution made by the Incredible India campaign in spreading awareness about India among the Asians living in the United Kingdom.

Ministry of Tourism, Tamil Nadu, waives off entrance fees for approved tour guides

 
Recently the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, government of Tamil Nadu, has waived off entrance fees charged from approved tour guides at the state government museum in Chennai and the Tirumalai Naicker Mahal in Madurai.

The decision was taken because of the protest raised by Approved Tour Guides Association (ATGA), Tamil Nadu. According to P. Asoka, president ATGA, for long time, approved tour guides were being charged entrance fees at the state government museums and some other palaces. The waiver is expected to strengthen the tourism industry in the state.

Foreign tourist arrivals in October down by 0.9 per cent
 
The recent statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism reflects a decline of 0.9 per cent in foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in October 09 over October 08. FTAs during October 09 were 4.48 lakh as compared to FTAs of 4.53 lakh during the month of October 08. In terms of performance, FTAs during January-October 09 stood at 40.23 lakh which are lower as compared to 43.24 lakh in January-October 2008. However, the growth rate in FTAs during Jan-Oct 2009 (-7.0%) have marginally improved as compared to the growth rate during Jan-Sep, 2009 (-7.7%).
