Etihad Airways starts operations to Hyderabad
Etihad Airways has launched flights to Hyderabad, which becomes its latest
destination in India. The airline which initially operates four flights a
week plans to start additional daily services from the start of 2010. With
Hyderabad, Etihad now flies to seven Indian destinations including New
Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. The airline
now operates 42 flights to India each week. It runs a two-class A320 on the
new Hyderabad route, which is configured to carry 140 passengers with 20 in
business class and 120 in economy class.

Travel agents' commission issue sent to the
Ministry of Law for their views
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA) has decided to seek advice from the
Ministry of Law, before it takes a final call on the issue of travel agents’
commission from airlines. The decision was taken at a meeting convened by P
N Sukul, joint secretary, MOCA on November 19. The meeting was attended by
the travel agents’ associations, airlines and DGCA officials. The MOCA is
expected to clear its stand on the commission issue within next three-week
time. According to Rajji Rai, president, TAAI and Biji Eapen, president,
IAAI, the meeting was very positive and travel agents are expecting a
favourable decision from the MOCA.

Star Cruises now to be known as
Genting Hong Kong
Effective November 10, Star Cruises changed its name to Genting Hong Kong. The change of name has been done in line with the corporate
strategy of the company which is in diversifying into land-based integrated
resorts and entertainment business. The company’s principal business is that
of cruises and cruise related operations.
The new name
also reflects the company’s association with the Genting Group, which is
Malaysia’s leading multinational company. Its major business activities
include leisure and hospitality.

TAFI to start Punjab chapter, Sushant Khanna
appointed as chapter chairman
Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) is soon expected to officially
announce the opening of Punjab chapter. Sushant Khanna, chairman, Khanna
Enterprises has been appointed as Punjab’s chapter chairman. George Kutty,
chairman, northern India chapter, on the occasion of Khanna’s appointment,
said that the association will soon give a final shape to the chapter. Ajay
Prakash, secretary general, TAFI, said that rest of the office-bearers and
other significant issues would be finalised before the end of the year. TAFI
already has about 40 odd members from the Punjab region.

Sarovar Portico, Ludhiana
Sarovar Hotels & Resorts recently opened City Heart Sarovar Portico,
Ludhiana, a 49-key property. The hotel is operational with 18 rooms,
Tiffany’s - the multi-cuisine restaurant and Willows - the lounge
bar. It will add another nine rooms in a month’s time. By January 2010, the
remaining rooms will be functional along with a meeting

Canada PM sees great potential to boost
arrival from India, CTC opens office in Mumbai
Speaking on the sidelines of his
recent visit, Stephen Harper, prime minister, Canada while handing over the
winter Olympic torch to cine-star Akshay Kumar in Mumbai earlier this week,
emphasised the need to grow the outbound traffic from India to Canada.
Identifying India as one of the fastest growing travel market, Harper said
that India presents a huge potential to Canada to grow its inbound traffic
at a time when other markets are showing signs of maturing. The event also
coincided with Canada Tourism Commission announcing the opening of its
tourist office in Mumbai through Buzz Travel Marketing India, who will work
to develop and grow the India market in order to boost outbound traffic to
Canada.

Jordan lifts visa restrictions on individual
Indian tourists
Jordan has lifted visa restrictions on individual Indian nationals visiting
the Kingdom as tourists. Last February, the Jordanian government had lifted
visa restrictions on tourists carrying the Chinese and Romanian
nationalities, who no more needed prior approval before travelling to
Jordan. It also lifted similar restrictions on Indian tourists travelling to
Jordan in groups and through a Jordanian travel agent. This also applies to
the Indian businessmen and investors living in non-restricted countries.
However, individual visitors were excluded in the decision and had to obtain
prior approval from the Ministry of the Interior.

Uttarakhand signs MoU with Mahindra Holidays
& Resorts to promote home stays
Government of Uttarakhand has entered into a strategic alliance with
Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd (MHRIL) on November 5 for promoting
and marketing home stays from various regions of the state. The MoU has been
signed to cement this joint effort in developing home stays as a unique
concept and authentic experience of holidaying across the state, with a
special focus on developing rural home stays. As per the agreement, MHRIL
will assist in classifying, rating, branding and marketing the home stays to
its members, inbound foreign tourists, FIT Groups and other guests.
