bmi to launch its first direct and thrice weekly connections on Amristar-London
route on A330-200 from October 14, fares start from Rs 38,091 including
taxes
Starting October 14, 2011, bmi
(British Mainland International) will launch its thrice weekly connections
on Amritsar – London route. To be serviced through A330-200 with
232 seats (36-Business Class and 196-Economy Class), the return fares will
start from Rs 38,091 including taxes. The flight will depart at 04:10 hours
from Amritsar and arrive at 10:50 at Heathrow, London with a brief stop-over
on Almaty, Kazakhstan without changing any aircraft.

PATA appoints Martin Craigs as the new CEO effective October 31
PATA has appointed Martin Craigs
as its new CEO, effective October 31, 2011. Craigs is currently elected
President of Aerospace Forum Asia (AFA) and Managing Partner at Hillcrest
International Advisory. For the last 25 years, Craigs (55) a UK and Irish
passport holder, has been mostly based in Hong Kong. An aviation industry
specialist, Craigs has held important and senior positions at companies such
as Short Brothers and Saab Scania Group, rising to become Executive Vice
President of BAE Systems.
PATA Interim CEO, Bill Calderwood said, “Martin understands the travel
industry and with his long AFA experience he understands associations and
the importance of membership.”
Calderwood added, “Martin also brings visionary leadership, outstanding
public speaking skills, strong inter-cultural diplomacy and advocacy
expertise to the helm at PATA. He is the right person to lead PATA as the
association commits to an exciting future of building business and advocacy
on behalf of our members. "PATA Chairman, Hiran Cooray, said, “With his

PTM 2011 biggest since 2008 in terms of amount of floor space booked
PATA’s Interim CEO told media at the
Mart venue, Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, that for the 2011 Mart, 625 seller
delegates representing 288 organisations had booked 3,431 square metres (7%
from 2010).
The three-day PATA Travel Mart
2011 concluded on September 9, 2011. Over 1,200 attendees joined the annual
travel trade event, organised by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)
and hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. The amount of
floor space booked, the number of buyer organisations and the number of
seller delegates attending is the biggest since 2008.

88 first time sellers and 105 first time buyers attend PTM 2011
The three-day PATA Travel Mart
2011 concluded on September 9, 2011. Over 1,200 attendees joined the annual
travel trade event, organised by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)
and hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
Of 288 seller organisations, 88 were first time sellers to the
Mart. In total, some 30 seller destinations (countries and territories) were
present. PATA reported that the Mart had also attracted 302 buyer delegates
from 279 organisations across 50 source markets. There were 105 journalists
attending from 14 destinations. Some 105 buyers were first timers to the
Mart.

Five-Year Plan
The working group of Tourism set
up by the Planning Commission has recommended four-fold increase in the
allotment of funds for tourism during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2016).
An amount of Rs 21,500 crore may be allotted as against the allocation of Rs
5,156 crore during 11th Plan. This was announced by Subodh Kant Sahai,
Union Minister for Tourism, while addressing the meeting of the Consultative
Committee of Parliament attached to his Ministry on September 9. Substantial
proportion of the estimated outlay is proposed to be allocated for
improvement of tourism infrastructure, human resource development, capacity
building and promotion and publicity.

Tourism Australia to roll-out a ‘10-year plan’ for India by early 2012 to
meet its set target of attaining 200 per cent growth in Indian arrivals
In a bid to tap the emerging tourist markets, Tourism Australia introduced
‘2020 Plan’ for global markets in November 2010. However, with the potential
shown by China and India, the Tourism Board will introduce a special ‘10
year plan’ for India and China to meet their expected targets in next three
to four months. According to Andrew McEvoy, Managing Director, Tourism
Australia, India will move from USD 826 million and 1,45,000 visitors to USD
2.4 billion and 3,00,000 visitors by 2020 registering a growth of over 200
per cent as compared to 2010. For the same, the Tourism Board is undertaking
various initiatives to boost the Indian arrival figures from all segments of
travellers.

a budget train covering all the 5 Sikh Takhts by December 2011
The Punjab Heritage and Tourism
Promotion Board in partnership with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism
Corporation (IRCTC) will launch a budget train covering 5 Sikh Takhts by
December 2011. The Mahaparinirvan Train (currently operating on the
Buddhist circuit) will be converted into the budget train as per
the mutual arrangement, for the new pilgrimage product.
